My new iPad synth, GrainBender, is available for the first time today in the App Store. It's on sale for $4.99 for the first week.

GrainBender is a new iPad synthesizer that makes designing new sounds easier than ever before. Just tap the bend button and sculpt your new sound directly in realtime. GrainBender is capable of making a wide range of sounds, from traditional analog favorites to exotic digital effects.

Key features:

- unique, intuitive sound design interface
- versatile oscillators with analog & digital waveforms
- audio clip recording and export to other apps via AudioCopy
- extensive but easy-to-use modulation
- effects ranging from chorus and delay to digital grunge

Core midi support?

Not in this version. I think of this more as a performance-oriented synth, so I made AudioCopy a priority instead of midi.

Midi wouldn't be too hard to add though so it's likely to find its way in in an update if initial sales are OK.

Is there a reason why the music apps are all mono? is there no way to get a stereo out from the iPad??

Yes you can definitely do stereo out on an iPad. I made GrainBender mono since I didn't see much benefit in stereo output for a synth like this but it's just a matter of asking for a stereo output when you set up your CoreAudio objects.

Any chance of a video demo? I've just got an iPad and aren't normally interested in standalone synths, but the demos for this sound interesting. Could you take us through the creation of a sound or two?

Post

Yeah I want to put a couple of video demos together. I'm a bit limited by equipment here (living on the road and only have an iPod for a camera) but I think I can at least get the fun things about the UI across. I'll try to get something up in the next day or two.

Thanks for your interest!

Hey it's Makunouchi Bento! I've been a fan of your stuff for a long time.

There's going to be a promo giveaway on http://musicapps.com.br/ and possibly one other site. If you know of any other good review sites that would be interested in running a giveaway please put them in touch.

Core midi will be included in the next update, with support for sending and receiving notes and CC. This makes GrainBender a fun controller for other synths because you can record automation into patches in GrainBender and use it to control other instruments.

Hi
Does this synth have multitasking for running audio in the background, e.g. Beatmaker?
