And just like plugins, we'll start out with free stuff to get our feet wet, see if we're interested... and if we decide that we want to take it a bit more seriously, and we want better service (or more webspace, or bandwidth, or uptime, or email accounts, etc) then we'll go to the payware stuff.

:shock: :shock: :shock:

your 2gig bandwidth wond go far!
:D Fair enough mate you beat me there!

But to be honest, at 4-5 mb for an average MP3, you'd have to get consistently in the region of 400 downloads a month. If you're getting that, then you're nearing the big-time!

Thats why i suggested Soundclick etc too, its good to have your own site, but places like soundclick are likely to give you way better exposure and the like.

Mr funked has a very good point! Check up first. This is why i recommended who i did, i've been looking for new hosting for months and done a lot of research. In my opinion, judging by reviews i've read, support i got when i contacted them, and what you get for the money, they can't be beat.

Important note(from a web designer so listen up!!) - there is no point in having a site that no-one sees, so don't be surprised if you don't get wads of traffic with no work from yourself. And even if you submit to search engines, it can take months before you are actually listed. In a nutshell - it takes effort to get traffic to your site.

That was Web stuff lesson 1. Next week - design theory! :lol:

That's very excellent value :)
Who with and how stable?

(it's about the equivelant of what I pay for a quarter of the space.)

If, however, you can't afford to be choosy and just need space, well it can't be bad can it?
Thanks for link G :D

My sites always been crap anyway, i can do HTML to save my life. It looks crap, but it gets the job done, lets ppl DL my music.

As it stands, my current Web Provider has asked me to cut my traffic down. I get my space free (250meg, email etc) but traffics gone up to 7gig a month, which is causing probs. Im happy to move files elsewhere, and if its free, im very gratefull :D :D :D
Just one happy camper makes the thread worthwhile :D

It is great for someone I guess that cant spen 50-60 bucks a year :roll:

but I will never DL shit from some place that does not have a fast connection :(

I have used these guys for 2 years and they are outstanding!!!!

sorry, it's $7.50 :) www.globat.com
so far very reliable and fast (had it for 3 weeks now)

7.50 a month for 2gig is great!

ANyway, lots of places offer reasonable space for reasonanble cost, but for musicians purposes the most important things are probably:

* no file restrictions
* FTP access (web interface uploads are shit)
* Server speed
* No bloody ads!
* Bandwidth

I plan to set up an account with Soundclick for the potential traffic/exposure benefits, and use my webspace to do a much better page with messageboard and other stuff (coded by my own fair hand of course). Also want to use some space to promote you guys too! I was gonna have a random link displayer and just add vast loads of you guys site links to it.

Cos i'm a nice guy like that! :D

as far as not allowing mp3, there are utilities that mask mp3 with a wav extension... wish i could find it now..

Post

this could be a problem no ?

Due to copyright concerns the following file type extensions are not allowed to be uploaded to our servers:

avi, mov, mp3, mpeg, mpg, ra, ram, exe, rar, tar, and zip.

Our system automatically prevents these files to be uploaded. We have hundred of thousands of members and it is impossible for us to verify every user account for copyright infringement.

There are ways to mask file types, but if the ISP mean what they say they will probably spot this anyway. Its also bloody stupid and a pain in the ass, and you'll get in trouble if you get caught.

I'd suggest you look elsewhere for webspace, or get an account with soundclick, peoplesound, ampcast or whatever.

You generally don't get file restrictions with most paid webspace. Like i said before, it really is worth money for cos you get what you pay for.

just rename to .wav :wink:
