Just sold my copy of Pro Tools 9. It looks like I'll be buying Reaper 4 next week.

I'm surprised to see Reaper and Cubase as the top two so far. I thought for sure it would be Logic and Live.
I'm not very familiar with Reaper... I'm curious what can it do that Cubase can't do? Has anyone ever done a side by side comparison of features for these two DAWs? If Cubase was the same price as Reaper what would make you chose Reaper over Cubase? (BTW I'm not trying to start a DAW holy war I just would like to learn more about Reaper)

You mean, if Cubase was $60 ($225 for professionals), or if Reaper was $600?Marcus797 wrote:I'm surprised to see Reaper and Cubase as the top two so far. I thought for sure it would be Logic and Live.

First and foremost - Reaper is dongle-free. I just sold Pro Tools, and I'm thinking about selling off all my other iLok'd software. If I'm gonna have a little piece of plastic sticking out of a hub, it better hold 2 or more GB of data that I can actually use.
Second - I'm not so sure if it's what Reaper does that other Hosts/DAWs can't, but if there's things that other hosts can do that Reaper can't. As far as I know, there's very little that Reaper can't do, and I haven't run into any problems switching. Cubase (and Sonar, Logic, Digital Performer, and Pro Tools, etc) comes with a bunch of added instrument plugins, but for the difference in price, I can buy the ones I want, or use freeware. Considering the music I'm planning on making right now, I probably wouldn't use any of the included instruments in any of those hosts anyway.
Third - The level of support and community appeals to me. Problems are fixed quickly, and anyone is allowed to spend time on their forum. I used to have a Cubase.net account without *ever* using Cubase, as there's information that was posted there that would work with any host (I was on Sonar at the time), but they got really strict about only allowing legitimate owners of Cubase to participate. I understand weeding out the pirates, but typically you figure out who they are quickly enough.
Fourth - The size/speed/capability. The x64 version is 6MB. My Pro Tools install was about 1GB, and that was WITHOUT the optional instrument plugins installed. I got tired of waiting for Pro Tools to load, and being stuck with 32 bit was getting annoying when trying to work with larger sample libraries. I could rewire Reaper in, but why not just use Reaper?

Well, imho many Reaper users like to propagate their DAW, so chances that they might walk past this poll without voting might be small... so this poll might not be 100% representative.Marcus797 wrote:I'm surprised to see Reaper and Cubase as the top two so far. Oh, here we go again
I think anyone who voted propagates THEIR daw. There are a ton of reaper users here because it does almost everything, it's stable, it's cost effective, and it gets updated frequently*
But cubey or sonar or live or whatever users are going to stick by their DAW's too
So the whole "all reaper users are just fanboys" theory really bugs me
*There has been a bit of a stalling though while the reaps get 4 ready.

1) It's KVR, that poll is totally pointless here.JD Gaffe wrote:So I'm curious as to what everyone's preferred DAW is nowa'days, or rather which one you use most.
2) Find what works for you, demo them all.
