I'm not that great at chords. I can do some in pretty quick succession but that really is not my forte as such.

You are in likewise company on that.
I really try to improve my speed and tastiness. But every day I pick up the guitar I feel like I need to relearn everything. It's like nothing sticks.
Oh well.......I keep trying.....

Guys,
The greatest solos in history are collections of pentatonic blues licks. I learned Jimi Hendrix's rendition of All Along the Watchtower yesterday, a song that's driven me as a guitarist ever since I was 15, and was surprised to find that it's the very same pentatonic blues licks he played on Purple Haze, Little Wing, and Hey Joe, just over a different chord progression. Master the C to A pull off on the B string and you're a dead-on BB King. Play those licks really fast through a Marshall Jubilee and you're a dead-on Slash. Stumble through those notes with an epic drummer behind you and you're Jimmy Page. Stick a wah on it and you're Cream-era Clapton.
MOST PEOPLE DON'T LIKE MICHAEL ANGELO BATIO!!!

Wellll...
Here it is - my new guitar.
http://www.mykaguitars.com/instruments/121/default.htm
It just arrived this past Saturday.
Designed in conjunction with David Myka.
Built to my requirements. David really took on the neck design, and even custom-wound the pickups!
It sounds amazing.
I'll be in sessions the next couple weeks with it, and will post some clips sometime later on this month.

But we DO like eric johnson, frank gambale, joe satriani, steve vai, and countless other really fast guitarists. I'll add dimitar from here abouts too as well as the 1000's of great and tasty fast players out there.

In my book there is one thing that separates the men from the boys, and that's how well they play for the song, how well they support a singer and make him/her sound good.
A million lightning fast notes don't mean nothing per se, good if you can pull them off in case they're called for once a night, if not, do something unexpected instead and it will be just as fine.
I'm with Eric mostly about the simpler stuff, though I enjoy it immensely when there is the occasional "clever" note thrown in, cool voicings, lively phrasing ...
If technique helps achieve that, gimme more !
If it's only for flash I couldn't care less.
