The upcoming plugin isn't a pitch shifter. The pitch shifting and reversed sounds you hear are pure accident. I have pitch shifting code that reverses (I use it in Shimmer), but I'm not using that code in this plugin. Maybe the one after this one...
I reversed it and the "normal" lush fade out sounds gorgeous as a fade in. :) I sampled it and also a bit of the pitched up melody. Is that Nick Drake or do I have to worry about your lawyers?
You'll have to worry about Nick Drake's lawyers, but not mine.
Do you know the (apocryphal?)story about the recording of Heroes? With the three mics at different distances? It's a pretty useful technique. Plus, w/ software you can use way more than 3 verbs! Shimmer went from my cool to useful list when I tried this method. Gotta buy it soon too!

It'd be cool to have a reverb that does this automatically (w/ side chaining?). It's not super difficult to set up with software, but it is the kinda semi-boring stuff I wish the computer and a smart programmer figured out for me. Just throwing it out there. :)
I've done reverbs and echos in the past where the decay is mapped to the input volume, for dynamic gating. The calculations in VRoom would be WAY too calculated, but I'll keep it in mind for a future plugin.

Well, the next plugin can make some less beautiful sounds:

I goofed up some calculations, and this is what got barfed out of Live. I'm going to fix it, but include the busted version as a mode for the new plugin.

P.S. The end of the sound file gives a hint as to the "normal" functioning of the new plugin.
Sounds like we have a Dr. Alex Paterson (The Orb) vst. :-o

I know I'm a little late to the party, but I was finally able to buy VahallaRoom after months of salivating. What more can I say, but BEAUTIFUL! I want to go through all my projects and put it on everything. I'm certainly no expert but I know what sounds good. I don't see using any other reverb for a while.

Not late at all! This party's JUST GETTING STARTED! WOOOOO!!!!

(the sad reality of the situation is that I have a summer cold, so I'm stuck inside working with a literally hot compiler on my aging MBP with a broken fan, so not really a party here at Valhalla Towers right now, but anyway...)

I'm glad you like it!

Wow, lucky! When I break something it usually just doesn't work. But the pitch up and pitch down made me think it was gonna be some kind of chorus or flange that had gone haywire, I dunno.

Granular delay?

Post

It's a chorus (+other things ?). Have a look at the ValhallaDSP forum on KVR.

I stayed up late last night, and made the ValhallaRoom GUI resizable:

It is continuously variable between the original awesome size, and much smaller variants. I need to test it and create new builds this week, and will then send out updates to all ValhallaRoom customers.

And a sneak preview of something new?

Post

hmmm...I missed that the first time.

Looks like a modulation plugin. I really dig the color scheme on that one.

Valhalla ÜberStein?

Awesome German bar in Chicago where you can order German beer in a 1 liter mug. It can turn into fun or trouble. That will modulate your mind.

But it's probably ÜberChor/Mod?

But are you going to make people use the umlaut U to find your plugin? I'm sure google would auto correct it if searching though.

(In Microsoft Windows, one can hold alt while pressing 0220 or 154 on the numeric keypad (when Num Lock is on) as a shortcut to Ü and hold alt while pressing 0252 or 129 as a shortcut to ü.)

My wife made me a Valhalla DSP beer stein. It is beautiful, yet dangerous. That's too much beer to hold in a single fist.

Something along those lines, yes.

I'll make sure that people can type plain old Uber, as well as Über. I'll include Ueber just to cover all my bases.

I had no idea how to type umlauts until I launched ValhallaShimmer, and started getting a lot of customers with umlauts in their name from Scandinavia and Germany. The current Valhalla customer record holder has 4 umlauts in their name. Which implies that Finland is the most metal of all countries.

It remains to be seen how the various DAWs deal with an umlaut in the plugin name. The .component/.vst/.rtas will probably be called ValhallaUberWhatever. I've run into problems with the OS handing umlauts in customer names for the keyfiles, so I figure that having an umlaut in the file name is a bad idea.

At least Cubase should handle umlauts :)

If you really like bad ideas (and if you're insane enough), then how about ValhallaÜberChøruß :hihi: that would be... uh, ÜberMetal

I bought VRoom three weeks ago... killer. Thanks!

love the resizing, especially its continuous nature...wish all developers would follow :)

The GUI in ValhallaRoom, other than the large "VALHALLA ROOM" graphic on the top, is all "procedural," in that I am using graphics primitives in Juce to draw everything, without resorting to fixed images or filmstrip images. So things can be redrawn on the fly. Not saying that this is the best way of doing a GUI, but it makes resizing easier, as opposed to having a fixed image for the background that would look blurry when resized. The VALHALLA ROOM text is a PNG, but it looks fine when resized, probably because it starts out pretty big.

The next plugin is 100% procedural - just text and graphics primitives. It looks a bit cleaner to my eyes than ValhallaRoom when resized, but I think this is due to targeting the original scale to a smaller size than ValhallaRoom, such that the fonts are proportionally bigger in the GUI. The resizing thing was a fairly recent development.
