When ever my wife is amazed that I can figure out a song we've just heard on the radio, I basically explain this to her.

I was coming home in the car today and listening to the new Tinie Tepah track.
For the first 30 secs it was like yeh uh hu ,blah blah blah.
I hear this shit in nearly every song these days.
I dont mind the name drop or production credit but I guess this is what makes up the 3 minute song these days. No verses only a chorus.
Listen to the new 50 cent/nicole scherzingerburger tune
wanna be my baby be my baby yeah yeah yeah. right now, right now.
As said in a previous thread words are repeated, echoed etc because the ill-iterate writers cant come up with 2 verses.
Which goes to show that a well written song starts off with the words first.
I've said it before and I'll say it again a song with just music is an instrumental.
The real feel and emotion of a wellcrafted song with lyrics tugs on the heart strings.
My 2 cents worth
Thanks zero for an interesting read.
Cheers

My 12 year old can knock out a kanye style beat on Maschine and play someone elses song on Kontrol S4.This leads me to believe that it's really the lyrics, the singer's voice and the arrangement that makes a pop/rock song unique and not the music. This has been something I have wrestled with in my band since I listen to a broad range of genres. Once you've exposed your ear to lots of different kinds of music, the four-chord-formula starts feeling extremely, well, stupid (for lack of a better word0.

Uh... yeah. And a song with lyrics is a poem with an instrumental backing? Frankly, IMO, though I love me a good pop song, and write them too, music with lyrics is seriously a lower form of expression to me. It's the trashy whore of the music world.randyandyvandaman wrote: I've said it before and I'll say it again a song with just music is an instrumental.

There is a difference between a lyric and a poem.

Funny shit for sure.
But,
I have a metaphorical safe with a combination lock that requires only 4 numbers. I'll give anybody who's guesses the right 4 numbers the contents of my safe.
Still funny though.
