If it just midi that you need, try some generic midi interfaces through the camera connection kit. I used the tomtop 4x4 interface. Which i got out of china for $35.00 several apps see all 4 inouts and outputs via coee midi. No hub is required.for that one either.

To stabilize midi performance a hard reboot may be required and shutting off any apps in the background helps as well.

What I really want is MIDI IO (1x1) + audio IO (1x1 or maybe 2x2) for better outputs and an input. That's it! Would be cool if Apple came out with something themselves but I don't know how likely this is.

I'm using a Presonus Audioboxusb with the camera kit and a USB hub. Works pretty good - two audio in/out and Midi i/o. I was thinking the hub was going to be a pain at first - but I can connect my midi controller to it as well as the Presonus If I want. On a regular iPad you might be able to get away without the hub but on an iPad 2 you need it.

Here is a list of working (and not working) devices to use along with the camera kit:

I picked up a Presonus AudioBox and will see how it works. I have it attached to a powered usb 2.0 hub, so it should work.

I have an Akai keyboard controller, so I am going to see how that works as well.

If for some reason it doesn't see the Audiobox or gives you the 'unsupported item' message - try turning off the iPad and then turning it on.

I do wish the CCK had a sturdier connection...it's way t0o flimsy.

OK Folks. I have had total success.

Presonus Audiobox ($150)
Powered usb hub ($15 or less)
Akai MPKmini keyboard ($99)
Camera kit adapter ($30)

So, for $295 plus the iPad ($599), you have a music production studio. Just plug in the usb cables and go. No drivers to install.

I used it successfully with Garageband, FL Studio Mobile, Nano studio, Music Studio and a bunch of other keyboard and synth-related apps. Latency is near zero and it all just works really, really well.

Hi KarmaComposer and everyone else, thanks for your informative posts. I am wondering however, if anyone knows if this will work with AmpliTube or other guitar effects Ipad apps?

I am looking to create a simple live sound setup with the iPad- voice w/ nice reverb, electric / acoustic effects according to sound, midi piano, outputting to a PA.

Any help would be greatly appreciated! :-o

I don't think it will because they take their input from the headphone/mic jack I believe. I don't think they 'see' audio coming in via the dock connector. I might be wrong though ..... I hope I'm wrong. I suppose it would need developers to add support for audio coming in from the both the dock port &/or headphone socket.

Just got an io dock along with a second ipad. I guess that one of them will stay for ever in the dock as it's a real pain to take it out.

Too bad that the usb connector can't work as an audio interface. It can work as a MIDI interface to a computer but when I connect it to the camera kit from the other ipad this one complains that the io dock uses too much power, which is weird as it has it's own power.

Beside that it sounds pretty good, and being able to play on one iPad and record on the second one adds a lot to the iPad musical experience (no more audio copy :scared: ).

Also too bad that it can't run from a battery, at least it charges the docked iPad and let's you use this one without being plugged.

Still looking for a smaller solution including both audio and midi.

ALso, how difficult would it be to make a digital wire that connects two iPads (or iPhone/Touch) and using the standard earphones on one of them for a very simple setup ? Apple ???
