That'd be the correct term it seems, in this case the graph would literally do that at a selected frequency, and at different levels. For that to be done, would involve far too many algorithmic sequences, and in the end wouldn't sound good at all anyway. :P
...what?

I'm talking about 1D functions (linear transfer functions) versus 2D functions (amplitude-related frequency response, which is the sort of thing people were hauling out to justify that goofy graph) versus 3D functions (possibility of frequencies showing up in output that weren't in input). Just extend the graph into the page along another frequency axis, and you'll see what I mean. Of course, the third axis doesn't have to be frequency, but it could be. That's all I'm saying.

Maybe I'm taking this too seriously. I'll go work on my NSERC application...

but yes, it should be a joke for sure. It's not a magnitudo plot, because it is not a function, for the reasons you posted.

rockstar_not wrote:Now, to the point mentioned right up near the top. There is a psychoacoustic effect of very steep filters that is normally unwanted. The psychoacoustician Georg von Bekesy called it something like the 'edge effect', where one's auditory attention is drawn to the edge of the filter, almost as if a tone is present at the edge. This is normally highly undesirable. It actually will have the opposite effect of what you are trying to accomplish, in that you are trying to eliminate something undesirable right at the edge of the filter, but in reality, because of the unnatural cutoff slope, you draw attention to it.
I always thought that all that stuff about the ripple is not the real problem behind steep cutoff. In fact you could replicate the ripple with EQ and it won't sound disturbing at all.
The problem is in psychoacoustic effect. Even if you somehow create a brickwall filter without any ripple, you would still hear side effects of the application of such filter.
Though, I think I've got an idea how to use that effect to advantage. I need to check whether it would work in the mix.
Wonder whether my advice worth a penny? Check my music at Soundcloud and decide for yourself.
