Would you mind elaborating. Serious question. I'm very curious about how you did this and what it is about Reaper that allows you to do this.

I'm a long time Live user and I use Fl Studio vst for the piano roll. I've been a little dissatisfied with Live lately and I can't help but notice that Reaper is starting to look very appetizing.

So, for example, if one wants to incorporate some of the cooler features of the piano roll in Fl studio to match the real-time modulation recording abilities of Live, how is this accomplished.

I'd hate to start that DAW learning curve again, but Reaper is starting to really peak my interest.
Reaper does have a learning curve however, the reason I didn't want to leave Flstudio was for the interface and mostly the piano roll. Reaper lets you customize all the functions of the program including key commands and all. My piano roll pretty much functions exactly the same in reaper as it does in flstudio (at least for the way I work). You can choose what happens when you left click, when you left click and drag, when you right click, click the center mouse button, when you hold shift, whatever. You can even make series of things happen when you process certain events.

It's insanely customizable. And with the Rado V4 theme, http://stash.reaper.fm/8872/reaper_n.png, it even has a Flstudio feel in the piano roll and interface. I actually figured out how to link flstudio's step sequencer through rewire so that i can write beats with flstudio's step sequencer and do everything else in reaper. Hope that gives you an idea of what is possible. If you are willing to spend the time, you can make the program function exactly how you want.

Swapped to Reaper after many years with Cubase and use that only now as I like to get good and properly into one DAW (sorry i mean host... ;)).

When the annoyances of Cubase got too annoying i decided to take the (dreary) month or 2 and try the other DAWs.

Tried first Ableton as i kept seeing hype about it and then FL but both were cumbersome and loop based which didn't suit me. ( :o ) Next was Studio One but with all of them was the lack of easy routing and configurability which is so important.

Was going to try Sonar next and didn't even consider Reaper because of its 'kiddie' name which made me not take it seriously, but was to do a collab with someone who suggested Reaper because of the saveable demo. Once i tried it i knew almost instantly here was the program for me.

Have yet to give Sonar a good go, but i knew it from back when it was called Cakewalk and it still looks to be using tools that you have to switch for every little thing. Might still be good, but it will take a lot to beat Reaper.

Ableton does have a track mute button. if you click on the yellow track number, its greyed out & mutes the track. I think maybe the guy in the video was going on about a mute shortcut or button for selected takes/clips.

Good choice going with Reaper. I jump between Reaper & Live, If I was doing more band orientated music I'd probably use Reaper a lot more. But Live is an essential writing tool for me now & I've gotten very used to working in Lives arrange view also, instead of exporting my finished tracks into Reaper as I used to. I have S1 Artist too & I'm tempted to go for the upgrade at the special offer price but I'd probably be better of sticking with Reaper & Live.

unless you have a soundcard modified with tropical fish capacitors, valves and allen bradley resistors they all sound bad compared to Sonar













seriously though, I'm a Sonar fan primarily because thats the one I chose at random years ago and because I am now 28 new things scare and confuse me so it's all I know and all I use.

There is nothing wrong with tracktion. It's just the single biggest disappointment in DAW history :shrug:

I remember discovering it. f**king sonar didn't even have a metronome :nutter: and I had spent 500 bucks for what was a turd. Tracktion was a breath of fresh air......it worked (other than dropping the first note :hihi: ) was light and fluffy, HAD A METRONOME and back then.......I really actually made music!

I'll not go into the details of mackie and the demise......just wish someone would pick it back up, FINISH it and get the groundhogs rolling again ;)

I use what combination of tools that gets the job done with the leat hassle.

Protools(job editing effects, dialogue and mixing them), Live (some music composition, idea testing fun) and Reaper (effects development, post production, some post-related mixing, music, podcasts, recording and everything else I don't have to do with Protools or don't like doing in Live).
Will mix for fun
