Hi
first sorry for my poor english.
I'm going to bought an ipad just for using it as a midi controller. In your opininion, do I need an ipad 2 for this ? I actually don't see the interest of this second version for my use. but maybe I'm missing something ? ( OS update etc).
I will use it with IK multimedia Irig midi.

thanks a lot for reading

How can you choose your interface before determining that software you will use?
Most apps AFAIK communicate via Wi-Fi not MIDI.

"It's not scary. You just lose a sense of who you are and all that sh!t"

I don't need actually all the applications, and find exactly what I want in this list, and I don't have wifi for all my computers .

I have an iPad 1, and use lots of MIDI apps over wifi with no problem. I've used: MidiMe, TouchOSC, Midi Pads, Yamaha Arp & Drum Pad, Thumbjam, Soundprism PRO and a few others to control VSTs on my DAW, works great. I've not encountered any problems with any of the available sound generating apps either, but that will probably come as more advanced apps surface. If you only intend to use it for MIDI control now, I'd definitely recommend getting a cheap iPad 1 and wait for the iPad3 or 4 to upgrade later. AFAIK iOS5 will work on the iPad 1 as well. And it's the best MIDI controller I ever had.

iOS supports MIDI over WIFI, and Macs have native support for this or you can use rtpMIDI on a Windows machine. So it *is* MIDI, just over a WIFI transport.

As for iPad 1 vs iPad 2, if you're only interested in MIDI then an iPad 1 should be more than adequate. MIDI doesn't take much computing power at all.

If used purely for controlling your external MIDI gear or softsynths on the computer then iPad1 will be just fine.

But if you think you might want to use the new Virtual MIDI I/O's now being added to MIDI Controller/Sequencer apps and Instrument/Synth apps I would say go for an iPad2.

For example...soon Genome MIDI sequencer will be able to sequence up to 16 channels/apps on the same iPad which each playing audio in the background. Apps such as NLog will also be updated to be multitimbral to make use of this. This will all work on an iPad1 but you will hit the limit very quickly. To have that many apps running in background and that much polyphony you will need an iPad2.

For the sake of another $100 or so I'd future proof yourself and get the iPad2 ;)

Really?! Blimey that sounds awesome! So you will be able to sequence iPad Apps on the iPad all from Genome MIDI? :-o That would be so bloody cool

Also note that iRig Midi uses core midi so even apps that currently don't may in the future end up working as they start to integrate Core Midi into their apps.
No longer with IK. Here is my Website | Twitter | YouTube | Facebook | Instagram

Ipad 1 for sure! If you have enough for an Ipad 2 , buy two Ipad 1! More Ipad more controler feature!
