okay, this thread will be be ages before it's over..I'm now in the designing plan. My current drawing has interior size 17"x17" the top 12" deep and the bottom 16" deep. There will be two inches of foam on all of the inside. The speaker faceplate will be able be moved up and down for tuning purposes though once I find a sweet spot that's where it will stay.

That's the inside diameter only and that will be 1/2" particleboard.

I read a series of articles years ago about someone building a studio in their home and what they did for walls worked well. They used 5 sheetes of 5/8" sheet rock (this for thos who do not know what I mean)

They made sure no seams overlapped so my concept will be similar but I'm not sure what thickness I will go with yet but I want no less than 4 and no more than 5 layers so I can stagger them like fingers with the corresponding pieces on the bottom so the top and bottom mesh together leaving no gaps. I think I will check woodworkers warehouse and cover each sheet with veneer to protect the sheetrock when opening and closing the lid and making a smoother way for the pieces to slide together.

I do not need to kill as much sound as a studio, I figure 3 1/2" added around the core of mass like this will do a good job. I'll get flight case type locking mechanisms to hold the top to the bottom and of course put it on casters for minimum floor contact.

As I build the bottom layers I am going to stagger channels for cables through the layers and put a small box on the exterior of the cab for the connections. I'm thinking at least two mic lines and maybe two speaker lines so I have a back-up speaker line. Of course once the laye is set and the cable is in that layers channel I will fill it all in with silicon.

The final outside might be tolex or some nice wood stained with the metal cabinet corners amps have and of course two handles on the sides of the top.

Check out those heavy black mats they use for silencing cars, if necessary raid a junkyard. I believe they have much better damping than sheet rock, in the low frequencies where it counts.
Mass and "deadness" of the walls is more important than closing every tiny little gap imho.
You don't want the cab to resonate and act like a huge woofer.
And put the thing on metal spikes on a stone plate to reduce sound transmission to the floor, age old HiFi trick.

I have harwdwood floors so spikes are out, remember right now I'm trying to improve on miking a cab in a closet and that is working out okay for me as it is. However the bedroom closet still has it's drawbacks in that I can't play when the wife is sleeping. I'm not attempting to plug an SVT into it and peg the knobs, I hardly think the jet city iso cab will allow me to crank my boogie or even my egnater and no doubt I will still be using an attenuater so we're probably not talking enough volume still to resonate the cab like a woofer.

The main criteria is to reach about the volume of the Frenzel and reduce it so it can't be heard in any other room. The guy downstairs stays in his bedroom which is 35' away when he's not away and he never complains about any noise anyhow.

The second thing is being able to make noises while I play that the mic wont pick up and outside noises like neigbors, phone, door buzzer etc, so I'm not going for an ultimate soundproof box...I'm far more concerned with vibrations causing noises inside the cab, every layer or assembled pieces will have adhesives on all connecting surfaces.

btw my closet rig will remain as well

Sounds like spikes are ideal, even needed (wood floor).
From the ground up :
Floor > thick layer of carpet or similar > heavy stone plate, gravestone type > conical metal spikes, tips facing towards the bottom (stone)
This will get rid of any transmission to the floor due to the minimal contact area.

No need for marble or even a real gravestone, go hunting, see what nature (or the nearest construction site  ) provide, you can build the spikes yourself or have somebody with a lathe do them, a 15 min job at best.
Cost close to zero, big effect.
And it even looks cool. 8)

well for now I think I'll stick with casters, I'm well aware of how spikes work but casters will probably surfice...if not I'll think about spikes. One nice thing about my apartment is that my living room is deemed a sunken living room but in fact in the other rooms the floors are higher than the living room floor by six inches. However the ceiling in the apartment below me does not reflect this so there is 6" of air between my floor and his ceiling where I'll be putting the cab as well. Looks really do not matter because where the cab will be no one will see it.

However if floor vibrations are a problem designing a quick spike system wont be a problem but keep in mind this will be pretty heavy and I'm not getting younger so I think casters have several advantages for my needs. FWIW in 2000 I had to have hernia surgery thanks to a Peavey CS400 :hihi:

here's the stats on the jet city

Inputs: Inputs: (1) 16-ohm - ¼"
Inputs: (1) 16-ohm - ¼"
Outputs: (1) XLR microphone level output
Power handling: 100 watts RMS
Cabinetry: Void-free plywood
Drivers: (1) 12" Jet City Custom Eminence driver
Dimensions: 34″Hx18″Wx18″D
Weight: 55lbs net

mine will have much thicker sides, about the same inside dimensions and 34" is almost exactly the height mine will be (I just read this stats now)

just for kicks the Rivera Silent Sister 1x12 Isolation Cabinet looks to be about the same size as the jet city and it's on casters...that comes in at 999 usd

renewed interest in building this because of the work that is being planned on my building. If they are going to be out there redoing all the balconies I see no reason why when they are not working on my balcony I cannot be out there cutting the wood for an iso cab. :tu:
