This took 13 hours to record in November 2009. The September 2011 edit/remix/master took 6 hours. This was much mellower than my usual stuff. I was not establishing a precedent.

Thanks for listening layzer. Glad you liked the mix. I think I am just getting lucky with these remixes (although I have a pair of KRK Rokits I use for mixing). I have never actually calibrated EnergyXT. I just play it by ear. I rarely use compression. The more I remix, the more I tend to pull individual instrument volumes down in order to leave more headroom, and, in my opinion, more clarity in the finished mix. I can then let the Mastering EQ take care of the overall volume level. It seems to work, although I have a couple of tracks coming up in a few months that have a much more challenging set of parameters to juggle with.

For some reason or other, The Who were one of the bands that I never really "got" when I was younger. I was more into the Prog thing in the '70s-'80s, so I don't think I had ever heard Eminence Front. I just played it on YT and I have to say that it is a pretty damn good listen. Maybe it's time to pay a visit to the Who's back catalogue.

I had the same thing with Led Zeppelin. I wasn't a great fan of theirs (although I did see them at Knebworth), but about 10 years ago I revisited their albums and really started enjoying their music (especially the live stuff). I must be getting old.

Nice circular motion to this and a wonderful pick-me-up listen!

I went the opposite route to you... adored LZ in the 70s and learned the catalogue on guitar... knew a bunch of fellow musicians who were heavily prog and always trying to get me into it, but I liked it heavy back then. Finally strayed into the prog zone in the mid-late 80s and became enchanted with a lot of it. The Who were always a bit of a sideline for me. Though I love some of their tracks I was never a huge fan. Course as I get older sometimes just hearing a song from the time of my youth is good enough, even if the track isn't a fave.

Although I wasn't crazy about The Who, I have to say that "Won't Get Fooled Again" is an all-time great track. Amazing that it got a single release really, although I'm not complaining.

nice track tim , that synth is on point ..the arp really compliments the groove..great flow and vibe.. one small thing that stood out for me was the drums..they sound like they are just a lil too far back in the mix..it could be my tired ears ofcourse.

Thanks for listening and commenting tatsama. Glad you like it. You may be right about the drums on here. I was going for a more laid-back feel with this one and so gave the drums less of a driving role in the rhythmic construction of this track. I also had the arps on here to help out.

At first I wasn't feeling it as much as some of your others, but slowly but surely you pulled me in with well chosen synth parts and constant catchiness.

I'm still not sure how you manage to be so painfully (in a good way) 80s with sounding retro in any way! It's a mystery!

It's quite odd really. I always favoured the '70s and the Prog era. I wasn't so fond of most '80s music (if I recall correctly). From 1985-1995 I was living overseas and, as a result did not really keep up to date with the musical goings-on of that era. When I got back to the UK in 1995 things had moved on more than a little!

drums aren't so bad.. well they could probably use a slight volume boost. However, the bigger issue it seems, to me, is the bass is too forward and boomy.. thus squeezing out the drums..

I really like the melody and flow of this one.. reminds me of MOD style songs from back years ago.. but with much improved sound quality..

I mean this as a compliment.. The MOD scene is important to me -- I've yet to hear the level creativity and artistry from the world outside of the MOD scene (as a whole).

I deliberately pushed up the bass volume a little on this because I had been thinking that some of my other tracks were a little lightweight in the bass department. Did I go OTT? If you listen to the section just prior to the reprise of the main theme towards the end of the track at 3:48 you can hear the drum volume increase. That's where I threw a second BD into the mix just to beef it up a little.

Out of interest, who are your favourite MOD artists? I often find myself playing catch-up these days, and it's usually a good idea to revisit the old days with a keener and maybe, a wiser ear.
