personally i put an anlyzer into the masterchannel only to see if there's not too much action beyond 60 Hz. i trust my ears more than an analyzer and i know my speakers well. The old eq sweeping trick on every track still works best. Ok, but that's just my opinion.
I trust in my ears, and the colour of my crappy-cheapy speakers too.
What is that old EQ sweeping trick, mate?

Share it with all of us, maestro :)

Have a good day :)

While the track is playing you use a narrow peak filter...
er, it's rather good explained here:

Please turn down volume when sweeping. It can get very loud!

Thanks very much mate. Very interesting all that webpage. I really needed websites like that one. With tutorials, tricks, techniques, etc.

I will go play videogames for a while, i need to take a rest.
I will post votes tomorrow or past surely.

Have a good day. :)

Hi, everybody!
I am not sure whether I missed it or there were no questions about it, so here is the question:

Do OSC rules allow R.E.A.P.E.R. users to use ReaPlugs, which are freely available for anybody?

Thanks!

Post

Hi!

Yes all ReaPlugs are ok, but notice that ReaVerb and ReaVerbate are not included in the free for all package.

Thanks, V'ger!

Hi, I'm organic io. I've been regular on the Soundevotion Competition for a long time. ( http://www.sdcompo.com )

I've kept my eye on the KVR OSC for a while, although haven't actually entered a round yet (although I may still). In the future, I may be starting a regular compo of my own, and I had a quick question about how the OSC accepts and hosts song submissions...

I noticed past rounds are hosted on the internet archive, but the current round (33 at the time of this posting) is on Soundcloud. Has this changed recently? Or do you accept submissions via soundcloud and then upload them to the internet archive for longterm storage?

I'm also not really clear about how the Soundcloud dropbox works.. If I upload a file to the KVR OSC group's dropbox, is it still hosted by my account but just shows up in the KVR OSC group tracks listing? Would it also then show up on my own page? Is there a way to select whether or not it shows up?

Thanks for your help. And respect for keeping such a successfull compo going.

Hi

Yes you have it right, people upload songs to their own account at SoundCloud, then share that with the OSC group via our drop box. (songs can be edited to share or not share via your SoundCloud account). When you click the submit link on our web page, it's basically just uploading to your account, sharing to our dropbox and logging in at the same time, but you can still upload without a SoundCloud account, you will just be assigned a temporary numbered account (and have to answer a confirmation email).

Then after competition end (after voting), all are uploaded manually to Archive.org for permanent storage.

It works well except that the SoundCloud streaming sound quality is not all that good, especially when the original format is already in mp3 as SoundCloud will encode absolutely everything even if it's already in 128kbs CPR which is the default SoundCloud format for streaming. And mp3 to mp3 transcoding will cause artifacts which is why we just opened up for wav uploads.

After 50 items (competitions), Archive.org has promised we can get a system where people can upload there directly which will be great as people can upload whatever format they like without any transcoding, but SoundCloud also has its charm with comments etc and download speed is better so I don't really know what's best.

Great, thanks for the info. So do you just purge all the songs in the KVR OSC Soundcloud group once each round is over? What happens if someone forgets to check the "downloadable" flag on Soundcloud? Do you disqualify the entry because you won't have anything to upload to archive.org?

That's great that archive.org is willing to work with you -- Ideally, people 10,000 years in the future will still be able to listen to these songs, because at some point somebody will backup the entire internet on a data-cube and bury it in a time capsule :)

Hi and welcome.

No, we don't disqualify deliberately.

When people are doing wrong things, we just warn them about naming a song properly, warning about to set a song downloadable, or about a non-allowed effects or samples, etc.

"Before cutting your foe with your blade, ensure yourself to know him better, from the respect." - Bushido Code.

The contestant has until the deadline day to change these incorrect things.
We all also help to others to make things correctly. To clarify any doubt from newcomers (and even some veterans :hihi: ) so this is a nice place to learn, to share, to participate/compete and to have fun.

I want to think so, that would be a precious free legacy for the future.
Anyway, as actually happens with classic and "old" music, in the future generations, some people will laugh at our actual entries and others will love them.I want to believe that.

Anyway, the most important thing is not like at or laugh at, the most important thing is that we actually creating music, expressing our feelings, and we sharing them with other people in the whole planet.

And, nowadays world, that's love, my friend.

Have a good day :)

Yes, just purge the group after competition end. Btw, we actually have 2 accounts since competitions overlap with one accepting submissions while the other is in voting.

And like Irion says, if someone forgets to make their songs downloadable, it's usually enough with a reminder, haven't had any problems with it so far.

About longevity, Arhive.org is obviously one of the best bets to keep the songs (and links) working for a very long time, as is Google Sites where the site is hosted. Must really give props to both as Archive.org has good bandwidth and streams 320kbs without hiccups, and both it and Google sites have good uptime and no nags with ads or whatever. Quite a good free solution together with SoundCloud, although SoundCloud acts up from time to time and is also more liable to introduce pay schemes etc imo.

But what kind of competition are you thinking of starting?

A regular tracking competition. Most likely monthly, although it wouldn't have overlapping rounds. It would be more demoscene oriented than KVR OSC (This compo would accept entries from tracker based DAW's only, such as Renoise, Psycle, Sunvox). Basically something similar to SDcompo that would eventually be the spiritual successor to it.
