So... here it is, another EQ emulation of a "german firm"'s broadcast EQ from post war/wall times - available at our fingertips.
The Rundfunkzentrum (RFZ) Berlin / Deutsche Post W735EQ
Al good and fine, but I see one major turnoff for some users:
it's not native, it's utilizing Acustica Audio's ACQUA engine.
This gives it certain limitations. Since Nebula is still bound to 8 presets, you simply can't provide a fully working fixed frequency 7 band EQ.
Analog in the Box wen't the "Abbey Road Passive Boxes" route in this case. Select one frequency, boost/cut where you need (in 1dB increments/decrements!). All good and fine, but if you want more bands, you need more instances, therefore use more CPU and Insert Slots.
Did I test it?
Not yet, sorry about that. But I am sure we can expect quality from Analog in the Box, since they're known for a while in the Nebula community. And they already released a similar pack (Germanos EQ Series) with Siemens/Neumann/TAB/Telefunken EQs from the same age. But also one freq band per preset as well.
So there is hope that Nebula 4 actually unlocks all these limitations and offers a new ACQUA engine as well, so that EQing is a tad more friendly. But I think this will take a while.
Is it worth it?
Depends. Introductionary price is 29,99 EUR, raising to 39,99 EUR in one week. Compared to GERMANOS EQ Series, it will be 15 bucks more expensive, but then again, it's standalone. The EQs are just as rare and you need a commercial Nebula license for the GERMANOS EQ Series pack.
For such an old EQ ported over (actually "rerecorded"), I think it's okay. Though a bit pricey considering "one" EQ only, and the limitation with "one freq band only" provided from the engine. This was always a negative point I had with Nebula presets (personal opinion!!!).
Else, good to see that there is finally some movement in the Nebula ACQUA base. IIRC, it's three ACQUA powered plugins now. It's interesting to see where this is going.
Count me in if I can utilize more than one band at once.

From the website, I understand it's a VST plugin (while all of the other products are indeed Nebula libraries) - it's under "VST plugins" in the menu and in the product's page is reported "Any VST plugin compatible host" as a requirement.Compyfox wrote:

I'm quite fascinated by all of these emulations of rare / vintage / stuff - but I truly ask myself what should I do with such an EQ
Meaning that it's rather limited, it'll probably sound cool. I was unable to dowload the demo, but I read on the KVR page it's also x64(?).

Yes, it is a VST, just like any other. It's just powered by Acustica Audio ACQUA engine. This is a Nebula with a specific purpose, it will behave exactly the same: if you're working at 44.1kHz, 48kHz or 96kHz it will need time to convert the samples to your sample rate (the unit was sampled at 88.1kHz), it will add a lot of latency and it will be a bit CPU intensive.Amon1973 wrote:From the website, I understand it's a VST plugin (while all of the other products are indeed Nebula libraries) - it's under "VST plugins" in the menu and in the product's page is reported "Any VST plugin compatible host" as a requirement.

Yes, it is also 64bit.

Take another look at what Analog in the Box had to say:
More info here.
It is a bit "too limited" in my opinion. The original box has 7 bands (since it's a broadcast EQ, think "Motown EQ"), this plugin gives you only access to "one" band at the same time.
Will you and your stuff sound better with it? Depends on your needs and what final product you want to go for. A lot of EQs nowadays are capable of that "old sound". But do they respond the same? Do they have the same harmonic distortion characterstics? (take a look in the manual!)
If you're after a post WW2/Berlin-Wall type EQ ranging from 60ies to 70ies that is not your usual british or US type EQ, go for it. If you don't see a reason, leave it be.
It's still cool that they actually tackled that EQ. German consoles and modules are not necessarily bad. It's actually the other way around IMO. They're just not as known as the usual suspects.
AitB utilize the "powered by Nebula" product line known as "ACQUA". This is pretty much a stand-alone version of Nebula, fully skinned and "locked" to this particular preset. Thanks to the V.V.K.T-Engine from Acustica Audio, together with the best converters money can buy, you are in luck to have a very accurate recreation inside your DAW.

There's something to be said about a man that can pare his thoughts down to a sentence or two and really *say something*, you know?
Compyfox, what are you trying to say here? I find your writing very hard to follow because I don't really see the point in what you are writing. You're like... summarizing what the plugin is, which is cool... but... what's your point man? If you don't like the plugin then don't use it. Why start a weird thread?

Has anybody ever really been far even as decided to use even go want to do look more like?

Didn't say I don't like it. I'm actually HAPPY that there is a firm (German one at that as well) trying to tackle such old (console) EQ's. The only problem I have is the "limited to one band" only.
I only try to weight the good/bad with each other in a discussion with the users. In the end it's always down to "try for yourself before you buy".
There you have it, 5 sentences.

yeah its limited - its a flavour EQ and an archive of the hardware in a tidy plugin format...and we all know Nebula technology is limited to one band at a time...for some - the benefit of the quality is worth these issues...and its €30...Compyfox wrote:Didn't say I don't like it. Boosting wide with Nebula EQ is so effortless compared to algo plugs.

What would really rock my house with things like these is a few good AUDIO examples OF THE REAL DEAL plus comparissons to the plugin.
All of this
"Oh it's so fukkin rare you don't even know it but it was the secret weapon of the popes vocals on his last hiphop album in 1879. It so smoothed out the bottom end of the pipe organ at 16Hz it's just unbelievable!"
is so boring.
Everything is vintage, rare, tube, transformer and kissed by Mr. Neve and Mrs. SuperSoundLady at the same time.
But on the website are no audios, no plugin demo (last time I looked it up) but a BUY button!!?? Strange world that is.

Well there is a demo version of the Germanos EQ Series (which newer EQs on the same level), but you need a commercial Nebula license. There's also their "Doc Fear" demo floating around in the Nebula community.
Granted, a demo would be nice. But then again, there will always be people saying "the audio demo is crap".
And there is no refund known (at least not to my knowledge). There is some sort of Withdrawal&Returns on their contact page, but it's for actually physical shipped goods. Well... somewhat a cat in the hat, unless you know their material already.
On a totally unrelated sidenote:
I just saw that they sampled a TL Audio M4 console with their "Tube Console" bundle. Interesting...

Someday we'll have to use a different delay plugin for every repeat, or a different synth per note.
truly horror.
Agreeing with the o.p., yes the unit seems promising to sample, that's it.
The implementation of all those singleband sampled eqs is dreadful.
