I don't even have a cell phone. I laugh when people rant because they can't get a moments peace. At work, cell phones have lessened productivity, and forced anti-phone rules to be imposed. Some people think its Ok to be late for work,
since they can call in and say it's a traffic jam.

It's funny because I was unemployed for a while and couldn't afford a cell for a bit. I used Yahoo messenger to text people, and people like did not understand that for some reason. I said it's like regular texting from a phone, just save those digits as my name, and I will still get that message regardless. I would be at home most the time to receive them at my computer, hence no job. They still thought they couldn't get a hold of me for some reason or just said you are too hard to get a hold of.

So now that I get a cell phone for a few weeks, I have only physically talked to 1 or 2 people with actual phone calls. I'll call someone, and get no answer. Then later (whether it's 5 minutes or whenever) I'll get a text from them saying "Did you call?".

It's funny how people think communicating without a cell phone is impossible now a days.

I'll tell ya what, I cannot understand texting at all (I understand the irony) but I would MUCH MUCH rather people text/read in the supermarket/etc.

Still, I was shipping something not too long ago at the post office and mom was there with here kids. The kids wanted attention.......

mom was having none of that! She was WAY too busy texting to deal with the kids

IMO what you (and we all) are experiencing is a very dramatic change in the preference how we communicate. There's a huge difference between calling and texting: calling is immediate, the callee has to answer right away, ie. he can't consider his words in much detail and the tone of his voice might give additional things away. Communicating by text message is the exact opposite: the receiver is in charge to decide if, when and how to answer. He can lay down the words exactly how he wants and no emotions get transported unintentionally. Think about it - the difference is extreme. And IMO many people prefer texting often not because the gadgets are so nice etc but because they can use this inversion of power in communication. Interestingly, while technology is often said to bring us all closer together, this tendency pushes us apart in reality.

Damn, I should have studied psychology or so instead of computer science.

Considering it will be weeks before there is anything "amp sim" to speak of (oh yes I did!) I'm perfectly content to go off topic about the merits (or lack thereof) of cell phones/psych/etc

1) texting is an addiction, not a "preferred" form of communication

People text to keep their minds off having to "deal". Though I understand it's not 100% of the time, it's close enough.

Are you joking? It's mostly mindless drivel about nothing. First (or a) it's designed to suck you in. Second (or b) it's designed to suck you in. Nuff said.
3) Unlike a forum where things are actually being discussed (ahem) texting is pretty weak. It's a way to chicken out or cop out from a real discussion much of the time.
4) Distraction anyone? Well, maybe I've covered this.
