I may have to bow out of this OSC...
Too many Windows stability issues. I've been a Windows developer for years (since 3.0!), and typically, if you've got things going and a stable hardware platform, you are fine. But it's a coin-toss each time I boot 7 on my Mac. Worse, I just responded to a post today about running on Bootcamp/VMware, however I think I'm kidding myself because I want it to work. When it takes a half-hour to get up and running it sucks the life out of you.
I may think about dedicated another system to Windows (just to do the OSCs), but that means additional monitors, etc.
I'll post what I have and maybe beat myself up to finish it, but it will be half-hearted. Too bad - I was just starting to like the track

I took it out of my last tune. The spirit of the competition seems to be "don't use anything that alters the sound of the synth in such a way that you couldn't achieve the same sound by using the synth alone". Things like delay and reverb would be achievable using some duplication and programming of the synth tracks and adjusting volumes and filters, provided the synth has low-pass filters. Glitch has some effects like reverse that seem borderline beyond what the synth could produce with good programming. Of course, I'll defer this decision to the gurus.electridied wrote:do you guys think i can use glitch(freeware/donationware) for FX?

Hi electridied, welcome to our OSC contests.electridied wrote:do you guys think i can use glitch(freeware/donationware) for FX?
About your request, sorry, but i think glitchers here are not possible (in any way).
I would liked to use them too in the other OSCs, but i never did it, due it changes completely the sound core of the synth. So goes against the rules.
We are talking about buffers!!
Also, it suposses that this month will be a different essence synth, less impressive than the past OSC synths (for call it somehow)
The most important is what you can achieve with this little free synth. So if you use glitchers, the essence of this month style would go to the trashcan.
I will try to explain it better; is not style of tracks what i'm talking about really, it is just Charlatan is a very limited synth, so this month, the most important thing is what you can do with this limit. If you use glitchers, your track will be totally different from others and also, far away from the "limited essence" of this month tracks. That's the idea.
Anyway, as rule says, you can't even use it in any other OSC essence, unless you want to be disqualified in 0.2 seconds.
Trancegate as much i think, because it just mutes and unmutes the sound rhythmically.
In the last OSC Zebralette i was making a track with a Trancegate (which i didn't unload by the way) and i could achieve nice "glitchy" sounds in the beat.
Have a good day and have fun, i hope you will come with a track this month

That's no good; I really liked the uniqueness of your last track.JoeCat wrote:I may have to bow out of this OSC...
There's also VirtualBox, which is free and uses a lot less resources than VMWare; not sure how well it works on Mac, but on Linux I use it daily - of course, not for audio.JoeCat wrote:...it's a coin-toss each time I boot 7 on my Mac. ... running on Bootcamp/VMware, however I think I'm kidding myself ... Another option would be to just get a dedicated Windows box as you indicated. After getting Windows installed, just connect up the audio and network and use remote desktop to access it. No extra monitors or anything, just need a way to plug the audio up to your normal setup and a way to get MIDI, either with a cable or MIDI-over-LAN.
I don't mean to post the world here, but the MIDI over LAN thing piqued my curiosity. Particularly for Mac-Windows communication. A few that look promising for sending MIDI:
rtpMIDI for Windows, "compatible to the network MIDI included in Apple OS-X"
http://www.tobias-erichsen.de/rtpMIDI.html
ReaPlugs - ReaStream appears to send audio & MIDI, too. I'm not sure if the Mac versions of all these plugins are free (or even available, for that matter).

And thanks for the great advice!
VMWare is not so much the issue - I'm having problems running even running natively in Bootcamp un-virutalized (that's a word now I guess). It's the little things - intermittent latency issues, occasional blue-screens, problems running with my external monitor, etc.
A dedicated box wold be the way to go - I like the MIDI-over-lan idea - thanks for the heads-up.
For now, if I run native audio with phones, no external monitor, etc., I can get by pretty well, so I might just suck it up and manage something - I love the OSC group.

Powers That Be:
Would a stereo-mono utility be considered a DAW "effect"? On a lot of DAWs that's on the channel strip; in Live you drop the Utility plug in. Seems a waste to search out a free-ware VST (if one exists) for that.

My opinion: no, this is more a function of the mixer/routing of the DAW and shouldn't affect the sound of the synth; I wouldn't see any problem using.JoeCat wrote:Would a stereo-mono utility be considered a DAW "effect"?
A little curious why go from stereo -> mono.
