I installed iOS5 beta 3 on my iPhone 4 and FINALLY I can plug the USB Camera Connection Kit with no "Unsupported Device" message, and it works great with any USB in/out audio device (power limitations seem to be similar to the iPads).

This is a whole new world for mobile recording. I hope USB audio stays enabled in the final iOS5 release.

Yes, Me hopes, too. That would be so great!

Does this mean my Blue Mikey will soon work with my iphone 4 - IOS 4 - ,or am I still sh!+ out of luck with that?

This is really great news! Has anyone tried this on an iPod Touch 4G yet?

I don't think anything will change with regards to analog audio input accessories. The stereo line inputs they required are missing in the 4G devices.

Please excuse my ignorance here as I may be thinking along the wrong lines here, but if IOS 5 on iPhone will support the USB camera kit and if it only costs about £25, does this not make the MIDI dongles available from line 6 and IK Multimedia a complete waste of money and R&D time for the afore mentioned companies??

I can however see the benefits of having MIDI leads as opposed to a single USB if you were going to be using multiple MIDI devices, but to me it kind of defeats the purpose of a portable solution as I'd imagine most folk just want to plug their USB controller in and thats all.

When you say it supports USB Audio, would that mean that I can take the USB out from any audio interface or guitar fx processor and record directly into the iPhone?

Not necessarily: one of the most important things these-add ons can do is deal with the limited power available on the smaller iOS devices. AFAIK you can't charge an iOS device through the CCK. iRig addresses this by providing external power (via mini-USB), while the Line6 version minimizes the power load by being very efficient (and possibly using the 5v available via the MIDI line). External MIDI interfaces will require their own power, and possibly a powered USB hub, which makes them less practical.

Only if the interface supports class-compliant USB audio which is a standard created by the USB consortium for the transferring of audio data via USB to which both OS X and Windows adhere to. However there are at least 4 different types of class-compliant audio specifications; I don't know how compatible the iOS is to all of them. And of course, you'll need the CCK.

I found some pictures of the internals of the USB CCK and it's studded with chips, so it's doubtful any DIY solution will work. There are some "Chinese" CCK kits around and I haven't heard of any that actually work. However one smart accessory that Apple could provide is a CCK that allows charging of the smaller iOS devices while in use. That would solve many problems.

Anyone got an update on this? Last news I read was that Apple disabled this in the the last beta version (7) of IOS5. Now that the official release is available, has anyone tried the CCK out on the iphone?

Why don't you test it first and let us know all about it ;)

Because i'm a tight arse and won't pay £25 for something that might be useless (it's a Scottish thing!!!)

However, if someone already has one for their iPad and just so happens to own an iPhone too, that that will save me the dissappointment as well as £25 I could spend on beer

I have just upgrade my iPhone 4 to the iOS 5 and can confirm that CCK is NOT supported ...

Thanks for the info freimann. That's a real pity they aren't supporting it on iPhone.

IOS 5 installed on iPad2. The Blue Yeti (mic) still gets the "device requires too much power" statement. Will try Akai EWI USB tonight.

I have Akai LPK25 & Akai LPD8 on my iPad(1) with iOS-5 working fine .. If your device requires more current than iPad is able to provide then simply connect it via the powered USB hub ...

I'm currently working on making my powered USB hub powered by a rechargeable battery.
