If you ask me, it sounds like the whole thing is going through some sort of processor, like an Aural Exciter for example [ http://www.waves.com/content.aspx?id=11290 ] ...and it's cranked up a little too hot...maybe a lot too hot.
If your clever, you can use a HW multi-processor with 'pitch / detune' or some sort of 'spectral enhancer' which will do similar things.
I like the crispness of the hats and everything above it...but it's just too much of a good thing.
The bottom half is perfect IMO. It has a sharp punch, so it not sluggish or muddy ...and it's not at all boomy. I can even hear a second sub-kick mixed in at times...so there's plenty of low-end , but other then the sub-kick, there's no reason to go down there.

The Young Americans album (from which Fame sprung) wasn't a rock album, it was a soul/funk thing. Terrific album.

Was listening to your music, really liked it. :)
Oh yeah...this brings back some fond memories...even some of the Rockers experimented with Funk as Disco became more and more popular...

Thanks!!! :)

Hey Barry! Good ears! and that's more than I can say because I have moderate hearing loss from a lifetime of cymbals and loud music.

I bought (or got sucked into?) SPECTRALIVE NXT from Crysonics?

Here's what they say about it:

SPECTRALIVE NXT™ V3.5 "the" definitive secret weapon for attaining that professional "commercial" sound. The Spectralive™ process is a novel and proprietary approach for imparting Vitality and warmth to all your audio material.

Oh gee really? Actually I heard a positive review of it on the Home Recording Network podcast and bought their bundle. UGG! so far a wast of money.

I'll check out the Waves...heard good and bad about them?

Thanks for posting dude!

They did indeed, and sometimes they fed back into the disco/garage scene - Larry Levan used to play The Rolling Stones' Miss You at the Paradise Garage for example.

Hey Chuck.
I don't think you got 'suckered' into the Spectralive NXT 'cause the tune really does sound excellent, and like my 1st reply to the song, I said it 'sounded near pro'...or something along that line. In that last reply I made, I later regreted I didn't use the word 'warmth' also as I described how the low end sounded. NXT, if that feature was used in your tune, does what it claims.
We all know what can happen with our ears with some wear and tear over time.
That's the perfect reason to use something like the NXT IMO.
I'll tell 'ya, there was way more right about the song sound then what seemed harsh.
I just dloaded it for a test run to see how it handles...and how much is user dependent and how much can be gained by it's presets/auto-pilot over a ambient to rock genre level range.

I looked at the Waves exciter to find it's not made for the PC platform. If your on PC , that takes care of that. If not, I can say that even though it might be a decent product, I rather doubt it can compete with equally affordable hardware processors.(or possibly the original it emulates.)
There just isn't any DSP which can compete sonically with hardware. (assuming they are equally of good quality) It's just a rule of thumb. Your not going to get the same as the real thing sonically from a soft emulation, for example. (but for the money, most of the time you get something that sounds 'good enough' if not indistinguishable from the original after processing and final rendering. IMO
This doesn't mean NXT isn't a good product. So far, from how good your rendering sounds here, it could actually be an excellent product, but as you inferred, your ears may have played a role in 'hitting' the upper mids a bit harder then needed to compensate.
(sorry to sound like i'm lecturing, running my mouth. I got a little carried away.
 )
EDIT: In addition, i noticed the mix sounds best on my phones (AKG and Audio-Technica), but not cool on the 824 Mackies. Highly 'present' sound and Mackies aren't a good match I think.

Awesome track!

Really enjoyed all of it.
I'm not a musician, but I've designed sounds that others use to make music. http://soundcloud.com/obsidiananvil

@annode

Hey Barry! It's all good bruv :) I really appreciate your candid critique! I need to hear these things-this is how we grow-right? I'm certain I can learn something form you? If you notice I posted this this track on KVRis in March 2008-oops I didn't have the SPECTRALIVE NXT from Crysonics at that time???-sorry bout that. I'm not sure what is on the master-all my files from that period got wiped away during a storm that took down my computer a couple of years ago-we love technology...."OK son please relax...have a lay on the couch and tell me all about it"....hehe...The SPECTRALIVE NXT from Crysonics and their other products may be cool I just don't know what to do with them?

And I am starting to get into hardware now-next up for me will be a decent preamp to go with the cheap ribon mic I just bought-I would like to keep it around the $500 mark and stereo...man...that is a whole other world...I have to watch my finances....you know frugal....

Nice track! I like the way you mixed all this funky elements, like your guitars, with these electro sounds. Oh yeahhhh! Great guitar solo also! Sound very jazz fusion to me, so I'm sure my dad could like it too, because he like jazz fusion.
Good combinations of guitars! It sound great! The beat is also great.

Just one thing, maybe it need a bassline (funky too) but it's just a matter of taste.

Keep it up!

TBH I thought the sound was probably colored by lossy file compression. I since have noticed that it's 160kbps.

As far as hardware is per se better than software... not particularly pertinent to exciters (a preamp is a different matter) I think. I use the one in Vienna Suite all the time, it's pretty surgical; I wouldn't want something that's designed to color, distort, a signal to be further complicated by mystery factors of the hardware's circutiry, seriously.

Thanks Mutateur for posting! :) And yeah a funky bassline WOULD be a nice addition-good suggestion! Thanks again!

I played this to a guitarist-friend on Sunday. He loved it. Before I knew it, we had a full-blown jam session going on. Much fun was had by all. Afterwards, a few beers were dispatched.

So is "hear" a play on words, or do we need the grammar police?

No, That was done intentionally....Omnisphere Is Hear...clever isn't it? Not! This was posted just when Omnispherre had been released and there was a hole lot of bru ha ha about it. And so this track was inspired by all the energy surrounding it,,,and now that i listen to it it's mostly guitar,,,,oh well.....grammer police? hhmm you may have to call them on Tim above----all that beer drinking...
