Just spent some time tonite playing with this more. I was able to connect my X-Station directly to my iPad using the camera connection kit. After a couple of tries, it showed up as a midi controller and as an audio target via AirPlay. It was great to hear this through a real sound system and decent audio outs. Would love to see more midi control settings in Animoog.

Was doing this last night via alesis iodock! Animoog gets the clock signal from logic via USB, and it works well, although the in-built recorder is a little basic. Nevertheless, I could play a sequence in logic and the animoog acts like any other piece of external gear. And now that alesis has fixed the midi note issue on the iodock with a firmware update, I can heartily endorse this as a method of incorporating animoog in your productions!

That's good to hear. That issue put me off the idea of the IO Dock. Good to hear Alesis have addressed this.

I've not been this inspired by an instrument/vst/app in a looong time.

iAgree. It is definately inspiring with how you can modulate the sound per key (and the x/y display). Would love to see this expanded to a workstation even- maybe a 4-8 track recorder built in (I really don't like the record function as it is. I understand the minimalism and trying to keep the same visuals- but it just seems so limited compared to what the rest of Animoog can do?

+1

Seeing this is the no. 1 selling iPad app in the world now, it could be the most sold synthesizer ever? Which means there should be quite a few people making cool presets, anyone seen some uploaded anywhere? Moog should have a preset exchange on their site, I think.

Exactly what I was thinking.

Hooked this up to my DAW today for the first time - this is just inspiring. To folks hooking this up to external keyboards I'd encourage you to get to know the built in Animoog keyboard as it is very well thought out as a touch based controller for this synth (and would be great for many others) - it's like a combination of a ribbon controller, continuum and trad keyboard all in one and you can get a lot of very subtle expression with it - things a standard keyboard would need poly aftertouch and a ribbon controller to do for example (plus it is microtunable). Luckily I have quite small fingers. Just gently rocking my fingers on the "keys" creates subtle variations in tone - love it!

Only annoyance is I find if I use more than 4 fingers sometimes this seems to activate some iPad gesture and it moves the screen instead of playing notes - any way to turn that off?

Yes. iPad gestures, as in iOS 5, needs to be deactivated for a lot of music apps/playing.

Good - thanks

Apple needs to add a setting that gives you a list of apps and allows you to selectively disable multitasking gestures for particular ones.

Animoog has roots in the work Bob did on the Voyager touchpad.
The Voyager is also a pretty good synth! Unfortunately, I couldn't post this comment from it though. I had to use my AnimoogPad.

Hi Tim,

You're making the ioDock do precisely what I want it to do -- but I've got the configuration horked up somehow and there's some kind of weird midi feedback going on. Can you point me at a good "how to get the ioDock to play nice with Logic Pro" resource?

thanks in advance,

mikey

Bah. I hate answering my own questions... Sorry to bug the list with this one. 'Turns out the solution to my horked up USB was to totally delete all the junk I had put in and reload with a simpler view of the world. So I got rid of everything pointing at the ioDock in Logic *and* deleted/reloaded the ioDock in the Audio/Midi interfaces program. Works a treat as an external instrument now. Haven't quite figured out how to send it clock, but I bet a little RTFM will get me there. Thanks for giving me hope. :-)
