Hey folks,

I'm wondering if some kind soul here can help me, as I've googled and googled for solutions to this but found nothing so far.

My wife is a hobbyist vinyl DJ and I'm trying to find some kind of desk-clampable speaker stand for her, or failing that a speaker shelf that can be mounted onto a VESA monitor arm (which seems to poorer of the two choices but I can't find anything that looks like a desktop clamp monitor speaker stand)

She uses Alesis Monitor 1 Mk II as DJ monitors - they're entirely adequate for this purpose and in fact that ported nature of these speakers adds a not-very-realistic-but-exciting "big bass" sound which is really perfect for what we're trying to achieve. They're about 10Kg / 20lb each.

We're using an IKEA Expedit shelf on its side, mounted on the matching casters as the DJ stand:

It's a very practical as the shelves are the perfect size for 12" vinyl, so it holds a lot of records, and on its side and on casters, puts the decks at the perfect height for my esteemed other half. But space is limited, and what I want to do is to get a couple of stands that will clamp onto the top side (side as it's mounted) of this thing. With about 12 - 15 inches of lift required, and some kind of shelf to sit the active monitor on.

I've searched extensively for something that might fit the bill but turned up nothing yet. Wall mounts are out because we live in a rental apartment, and floor standing stands are not very practical when you want the tweeter at standing, rather than sitting ear level (in this case about 5 1/2 feet off the ground), and floor space is limited so a tripod stand is not practical.

There are plenty of monitor arms that clamp onto a desk that will deal with a 10 kilo weight, but I can't find anything anywhere that looks like it will hold a monitor speaker. Surely I can't be the only one with a requirement like this?

If anyone can give me a lead on something that might work I'd be very very grateful indeed.

Cheers,
Grant

I fixed the link for you ;)

If I understand you correctly you want to make 'ears' on the desk for the monitors? Just cut some boards, either screw them to the desk or use clamps and then use a couple of right angle brackets for additional support. You can leave the bracket attached to either the desk or the shelves then use some small lag bolts with wing nuts for quick assemby/disassembly :)

edit, you could just put bracxkets under the ones you fear wont support the monitors.

Hey Hink,

Yeah you're exactly right, "ears" is a good word to describe what I want to do. Board cutting is probably not a good idea as I don't have anywhere to do that, and I want this to look good (I have a realistic idea of my own skills in the DIY area).

However angle brackets to support a smaller stand is a good idea. In fact reading your comment has given me a couple of new ideas, so thanks a lot :)
