And thus, I need a guide/PDF book that is free to get the basics.

And from there on, I won't probably get far as a freebie, so I'd also love to get some books that are more advanced but not necessarily free anymore!

Can anyone here recommend me any?

Thank you :)

EDIT: Incase anyone will be wondering, I'm interested in House/Electro scene myself.

Scales, Modes and Chords
Unfamiliar words can be looked up in my Glossary of musical terms.
Also check out my Introduction to Music Theory.

For the very basics, here is something not free but quite cheap ($10 in amazon)

http://www.amazon.com/Chord-Wheel-Ultim ... 381&sr=1-1

Only covers major keys though.

Here is something free which covers minor keys as well -- a great piece of software with a well-written manual which covers not only the software but some basic theory. The software can be used to send midi data to the VSTi of your choice.

Either can give you a quick start to writing chord progressions.

For free:

Nor free but very cheap and I learned a lot from it:

Best purchase I have ever done.

A nice little app for chord progression (only major scales):

It's donationware.

I completely agree with manducator. Both the ravenspiralguide and Gary Ewer's books are excellent.

If you can, get the entire Songwriting package from Gary Ewer. The Essential Chord Progressions, More Essential Chord Progressions, and Chord Progression Formula books are instant gratification.

But the best part is the Essentials of Songwriting. It really pulls everything together.
