Sure it could be done!

You can buy a product as "Gift this App" and send it to someone who is registered in the app store.
You would just need to collect the users email addresses who are registered to the app store.

The loophole is someone would need to process this all manually for each user and click for every participant of the group on "Gift this App".

I'm pretty sure there is no retailer-backed login in the app store to batch process this kind of thing but I could be wrong.

Why don't you people read the whole thread?
If you follow the iOS scene closely like I and many others have done for a while, you see there's an increasing amount of music making apps coming out, the competition is getting stronger every day and lots of the bigger companies are getting into the scene. It's hard to even get noticed if you don't have a marketing department on your hand. And when there's so many cheap apps lots of people often end up buying four for $1.99 each instead of one for $7.99. Even though the more expensive one might have been better. But next week there's four new very hyped $1.99 apps coming out..

Animoog was the number 1 sold iPad app in the world for a week (which is the only music app except for Garageband that have achieved that AFAIK) and was talked about everywhere, so the intro price was probably a good business decision for them. While I agree that's way too low for the quality of the app, it surely increased the sales and buzz around it. But that's their decision, and they can probably afford the risk-taking.

I'm sure there's lots of really great apps that are more 'reasonably priced' that would get lots more attention if they did some kind of groupbuy thing.

iOS Developers do price drops all the time, but they might even go unnoticed to lots of people. If they'd set up groupbuys and lower the prices for a while, AFTER gathering lots of interest, that might be a better way both for appmakers and buyers.

I think group-buys for iOS apps could be a good thing, especially for the more expensive and/or niched apps like the 2 I mentioned.

I've bought VST stuff I'd never heard of if there hadn't been a goup-buy, and some I'd never bought otherwise, and then upgraded from. That's the point of group-buys isn't it? That's it's a win-win situation for both parties. You get exposure for your product, gather lots of new users who in turn spread the word. And gain some goodwill in the process.

I can't see why it shouldn't work for apps. It's of course up to every developer so I don't get the negativity thrown at the suggestion.

I agree that it is a good idea from a marketing point of view. I just don't like that people seem to expect to get everything for almost nothing.
Even 70$ isn't really much for an app which may have been in developement for months. 70$ is of course a lot of money for most of us. But you can't always get what you want. If you can't affori it, don't buy it or save for it.
Sorry if my replies sounded harsh. I'm really not like that. It's just one of the few things which make me "angry" for quite some time now :hihi:

Always remember that if a developer is not making money, they will not be in that market. Fact is developers are falling all over themselves in the race to develop iOS apps.

Just like anything else, the good ones make money. The bad/average/overdone ones, not so much.

No offense taken. But I dont think that the OP has the intention to "get everything for almost nothing." And the price structure of iOS apps is just the reality. That won't change. Might as well enjoy it and think of ways for independent developers to get their products out more. And I think groupbuys could be one way.

And the low prices don't necessarily mean the developers will lose their investment. The potential market is huge, and growing everyday. I've seen lots of people getting into music production with iOS devices that haven't thought of it before. Which might not be a good thing, but that's another subject!

With over 15 million iPads sold, 100 million iPhones and 45 million iPod touch, if you get to number one in the appstore, that's BIG money. IK Multimedia has said they make more money on their iOS apps than their VSTs. And it's only just begun. It's all good I think, and very exciting times for music making.

C'mon, the thread is 2 pages long, you could at least read it through, before injecting sarcastic comments that are of absolutely no use to anyone, in a thread that's actually trying to be constructive about something that other people care about.

Who's being sarcastic?
After two apps I will have saved enough for a cheeseburger.

I don't think the OP of this thread indented group buys for $1.99 products?
(At least I hope so!)

It would be worth for $999 appstore products like this or this - but these are clearly exceptions.

I paid triple that for my study material, and would jump on that now.
A bargain IMO.

Of course it's not for $1.99 products. Which is clear for everyone who takes the time to read the whole thread. Anyway, would be interesting to hear some iOS developers views on this?

I heard no buzz around Animoog, bought it only because it was cheap & the GUI looked great. And it's indeed a great synth, while I'm no ipad fan at all.
