It just seems clunkier than in for example Logic or Live, where you have a track selected and simply or double-click to load the instrument to that track. I didn't see any direct load to a track.

Also, once an instrument is loaded, how do you replace it? I only see remove in the right-click context. It seems like everything is multiple steps to do simple instrument loading/replacing. Am I missing something here too?

Yes you are missing something. It's all in the manual. Anyway, I'm not exactly sure how a single drag/drop to start playing an instrument immediately is "multiple steps" (?) but everyone has their own subjective impression of these things.

I'd say if it feels klunky to you compared to Ableton or Logic, walk away from it. Or at least read the manual a bit more.

I'd say if it feels klunky to you compared to Ableton or Logic, walk away from it. Or at least read the manual a bit more.

I have walked away, many times. However I am extremely impressed by a couple of things like the ability to edit a frozen track, or apply effects to regions, render and bring back the effects any time. The way you are able to cut frozen regions, and it moves the midi and the audio around simultaneously is exactly what I wrote to Apple suggesting about 8 years ago, shortly after they introduced freeze.

I fully expected the "go read the manual", I just didn't plan on spending too much time delving into something I'll likely end up leaving alone. Being pretty familiar 4 or 5 DAWs, I can usually find what I'm looking for in a new one by checking context menus and menu commands pretty easily. I still haven't found how to replace instruments/effects, would have thought it would be obvious.

Sorry man, I didn't say "read the manual" to try to brush you off... ... just that a PDF search of "replace" is much faster than typing a question on an internet forum and then waiting for an answer.

It (putting "replace" in the search box of the manual pdf) led me directly here (below) on the first tap of the return key and took all of 5 seconds...

You can drag a virtual instrument from the Browser and drop it in a blank space in the Arrange view to create a new Instrument Track with that virtual instrument. You can also drop the virtual instrument on top of an Instrument Track to replace the existing virtual instrument.

Faster than waiting for a reply on the net that will tell you the same thing. So let me revise that comment about reading the manual, sorry.

Thanks guys. You have answered several of my questions on here.

I am using S12 64bit on windows 7. Only use 64bit plugins, etc. 100% 64bit.

However, I love using Renoise. I think the version I use is 2.7.2. It is a 32bit only app only at this point for windows I guess.

Can I still connect Renoise to S12 as a rewire slave?

You should be able to rewire any rewire-capable app to S1.

Any videos or tutorials out there on using rewire with S12?

comming from cubase here the studio one way of droping vst into the track is one of my favorite thing of studio one, just drop it in and of u go.

I see you're point but I already knew you can drag plug-ins over top of other tracks. I was specifically referring to the ability to load directly in place. Sorry I know this is a small point to some and irrelevant to you or others, but when you're just used to using a couple different DAWs that work that way (like Ableton's hotswap or Logic's ability to swap out the instrument or even presets of different instruments and plug-ins at the instrument slot), it really is something that can bug you when you don't have it, especially when going through many different presets or devices. You may not believe me, but when you're trying to go really fast and try out different sounds etc., that kind of thing can actually make a difference. I have a tendency to try many different "templates" of sounds from many different plug-ins (synths or effects), and the thought of constantly dragging things around doesn't totally excite me. But hey, it's all about what you're used to I guess. See this is exactly why I don't spend too much time digging through the manual when I'm just testing something out. I usually have a pretty good feeling of what can and can't be done. You did get me on the vertical stacking of the mixer effects though! Didn't see that little icon.

Drag from the browser over top of the existing instrument or effect (or track). It is easy and straight forward. It's just that when you're used to having ableton or Logic's hotswap in place, it is much quicker. I don't mean to make a big deal of it though, was just curious if I was missing that in Studio One.

Studio One doesn't do that thing all that well yet, replacing instruments while leaving the plugs alone, etc. The thing is, and I guess this goes for all hosts, you take everything you like and dislike and if - on balance - the bad outweighs the good as relates to what you use now, Ableton, Logic, whatever... easy choice, stick with your current host.

As a group we tend to demo everything out of sheer curiosity but we do need to get beyond the idea of there being a perfect host out there. You shouldn't even (IMO, mmv and all that) be looking to switch unless you're unhappy or unproductive or a demo of somethig else just immediately feels better to you.

But they all have subjective flaws so if the stuff that's really important to you isn't done the way you prefer... easy decision.

Good luck man. Don't stress yourself out looking for the perfect DAW. It doesn't exist.

Nah I'm not searching for a DAW at all. I was just blown away by some of the Studio One features (mainly the freeze functionality and the new melodyne stuff). I'm also not a fan of audio units and have contemplated ditching Logic. But I still like it as a multitracker (comping etc.) rather than Ableton (which I use more). Now it seems Studio One has much of what I like in Logic, but with VSTs and other cool stuff.

Things don't always immediately feel better to you though, things which could end up being something you absolutely love. I had a similar experience when I first tried Ableton Live. It didn't do a couple things like Logic and so it didn't grab me at first. Now I don't know how I didn't love it right at the start.

How do you insert midi fx? I searched for the term midi effects in the pdf but it returned nothing.

It doesn't have any yet, for instrument tracks. Out of luck if you're looking to use / insert a midi plug (VST I guess?) to affect the midi stream, sorry.
