Peace,
Andy.
Of course there are "pro" considerations when choosing instruments. My first acoustic guitar was a horrible thing to behold - much less play. A friend loaned me his Takamine for the weekend, and lo! My playing improved about 100%. To me, the main considerations are: how expressive is the instrument? Is it well-made? Can I get the sound that's in my head out there with this thing? Are there technical issues that prevent me from playing it to the best of my ability?
None of these pertain to the soft synth vs hardware idiocy. IMO. But then, Chick Corea kicked me off stage in '85 when I showed up with a fractured, Hong Kong-made chicken shake and Toys-R-Us Tambourine. The shame hounds me to this day.

Everyone gets released into the charts these days. It has nothing to do with music.breakmixer wrote:I'm sure pro musicians(i.e. musicians getting their music released commercially and into the charts also) are using a mix of both hardware and software, why limit yourself to hardware if the software can do the job(and costs less).izonin wrote:Your logic is good, but only theoretical. In practice, all professional musicians are very critical about their sound.projectdan wrote:But, if a pro buys cheap software, by definition, it is pro gear. I know of many hobbyists with expensive analogue synths, does that make analogue synths hobbyist gear.izonin wrote: If you're not a pro musician, then you obviously don't need pro gear.
I know I shouldn't be polluting a troll thread with logic, but couldn't help it.
Recently I bought a few hardware synths(Plugiator, Ultranova, Miniak and a Yamaha DX-21), and whilst I like them alot it made me appreciate my software a little more, granted I have not bought a real analogue synth purely because it's out of my current price range.
Software samplers are miles ahead of Hardware Samplers IMO, and in certain cases the Software VA's can sound just as good as the hardware VA's, with OP-X Pro II, ACE and Synthix being standout to me.
PS I'm not a pro, so my opinion doesn't count.
Just think about it for a moment. There might be a reason for the high price of the analogues.

I've seen-and heard many a pro using cheap instruments as well as so-called pro instruments. It's not the size of your wallet-it is what you DO with it that counts.

Yeah, I recently saw this concert of John McLaughlin's band and the pianist was playing this Roland SH-201. He sounded like shit. And he wasn't playing anything inspiring.trimph1 wrote:Equine Plumage.izonin wrote: If you show up at a gig with some poor sounding synth, they'll just kick you out.

My point is that Lyle Mays wouldn't touch one. Those people are serious about their music and their sound.

What is your defintion of music? Commercial or underground, Classical or Dance etc, it's all music. Just may be not to your taste.izonin wrote:Everyone gets released into the charts these days. It has nothing to do with music.

Hmmm, Herbie Hancock - Sure I saw him on Arturia's website the other daw, or maybe he isn't a real musician - that's why he was there...izonin wrote:Classical, jazz. Where real musicians play real instruments.

Well, here I have an Arp2600 and a Minimoog that were used professionally by me when I did the gig thing. Both have been redone to somewhat(mind finding EOL parts can be a b**ch) original state.
When I noticed the classical jazz scenario I thought...mmmmm...that threw out New Orleans jazz, the Marching bands of that era, as well as guys like Sun Ra...you might want to be a little more exact as to WHO this classical jazz represents then.
Or are we talking about Wynton Marsalis?

In the analog vs. soft debate, their synths are the absolute proof that software sucks.

How do you know that, are you a mind reader? What do you even mean by that?izonin wrote: Yes, used in an anecdotal way.
I presume this is a private definition of the word 'real' which has no actual consensus with anyone outside your own head, and is thus entirely disingenuous when used in any context. And this is MTV music, not real music.
An idiot on Set Theory:
"In some cases there is an object called red that contains everything that is red. In much the same way a pot is a plate."
