Using rhythms and melodies without being dancy?

I'm still trying to figure out my style. I want to combine all of the aspects of music I like and put them together, regardless of genre. I want to use rhythms and melodies, but I don't want them to be dancy. I want to make headphone music. Any advice on how I go about this?
The music's electronic, by the way.

yeah, get busy banging out rhythm on something, get off the computer and get your hands on some bongos or something. Study rhythm, learn to read rhythm, see if there's something at the library or at the community college. Stay away from all the loops and construction kits, get your own sense of time together, follow the beat of your own uniqueness, but get your hands dirty...

Jan has got a good instruction set. Asking that something not be dancy begs the question what is dance? I've seen some realy great dance performances using music that would not be considered dance. We cannot escape rhythm we can only choose rhythm when we do it becomes part of the definition process.

seems like 'dance music' has meant 'four on the floor' for a lot of years. I never was inspired to dance by it. It's for people with no sense of rhythm to feel a pulse so they can ape moves from movies to, in the hope to get laid apparently.

Not always. British dance genres like Jungle or Garage have emphasized syncopation.jancivil wrote:seems like 'dance music' has meant 'four on the floor' for a lot of years.

liqih's demo for his synth, "little sea waves" is certainly in the genre of "electronic listening music"
that's why i posted nikmis. firmly defined by meter and key.
