who'll be first with a DAW controller?

Not some Mackie HUI emulator, but a proper, integrated ipad-as-control system.
Cubase has the CC121 and the newer mini-me's, Live the APC and Launchpad, Logic the Euphonix stuff... but surely there's a huge market there for a dedicated, integrated multi page app. One page for transport, one for XY pad, one for faders/pots and pans...
We're tantalisingly close with the IO dock, WIFI Midi [a la Spectrasonics]...etc. But as yet there's no major DAW manufacturer that has released a proper, dedicated ipad control app. Not even Apple. C'mon guys!

Why would you bother?
The point to the iPad is portability.
If you had a controller why not just use a computer?

In the same way that 'why bother' about controlling Omnisphere with Omni TR? Perhaps you misunderstand what I mean. Using the iPad, with its multi-touch capabilities and remote network ability to fine-control a computer based DAW. Dragging the potential out of the box with a truly configurable multi-touch editor. Being able to wander freely between monitor placements with a handheld FOH/mix control. Having the functionality of a Euphonix mix, Mackie HUI, APC40 or CC121 without the need for unnecessary duplication of hardware.
I see quite a few selling points. Why, don't you?

Ah I see, so you want to use it that way.
Havent we already got something similar with a TouchAble and ioDock combo?

We've got a form of decent workaround, but I'm thinking more along the lines of a dedicated, DAW-specific, manufacturer-made solution, with the same tight feeling of integration that Spectrasonics have instilled in the OmniTR app, or - in hardware - that Presonus have with the StudioLive or Steinberg with the CC121. The app-as-selling-point feature of the DAW, built from the ground up to offer that fully integrated experience.
Surely it'll happen, but I wonder who might be first....

Not so sure it's inevitable TBH.
A software investment is obviously signicantly less than a hardware and software invesment.
So to generate favourable return on investment with software is relatively easy, doing so on hardware investment a lot more difficult. I'm not sure enough people have an iPod AND the relevant DAW to make it worthwhile.

Propellerheads are hiring 'Mobile developers' so Reason users are hoping this might lead to (amongst other things) a dedicated Reason controller. That would be nice

Obviously this isn't a DAW controller, but it kind of sets the precedent :-

I think Live will be the first.
I think they are working on one as we speak.

I think the biggest problem with that level of DAW control is that the Ipad is a third party device the DAW companies have no control over. What happens when you spend 6 months or a year integrating the Ipad and then a new one comes out that breaks compatabilty or it gets dropped by Apple ?
There's already been similar problems with Ipod docks. Apple changed the size of the Ipod, so to use a new ipod with an older dock you have to get some an adapter.
+ pots seem like a bad idea on a touch screen. Do you use 1 or 2 fingers to turn it ? It doesnt feel like a natural movement like virtual sliders.

touchable is amazing. I think the Abe's will expand on that and make it even more integrated.Mushy Mushy wrote:Ah I see, so you want to use it that way.

Since they have an iPad control app for the their StudioLive mixers, I was hoping that Presonus would have one for Studio One 2, maybe they'll still bring one out.
I think the best thing out there right now is V-Control Pro with Logic, because it's using OSC and has features not available with the MCU protocol.

V-Control Pro is already available and is an excellent dedicated controller app for Pro Tools - yes, it uses the HUI protocol, but it's essentially what the OP is asking for. I would also like to see PreSonus release a dedicated iOS app for S1v2. For some reason, I don't see Cakewalk ever releasing one for Sonar, but that would be cool, too.

If I can get my act together I'm going to finish one that works with Renoise's scripting capabilities, but I'm not an official Renoise developer. There's great potential with Renoise.

Reaper can be controlled by every device out there that has a web browser. Why should anyone develop different apps for every DAW, every screen size and every mobile OS if a browser will work just as good?
