My search for the ultimate compressor

I guess most things are worth considering, but I don't think any of those is worth buying.
This is just another "what is a good compressor?" thread, so I'll just say that with Waves API 2500 (which is just as amazing and versatile as the hardware), SplitComp (best high threshold compressor by far, and I don't need price comments, I know it's f**king expensive, thanks) and Black 76 (for nice character with some things), I get any kind of compression I want, and mix peak limiting is another story so let's not go there.

Please feel free to check SD-COMP87

It features a "real" sidechain, an easy C/P and a damn stupid price (€29) for historical reasons.
All the best,
Philippe

Don't forget Voxengo. Several great compressors with Marquis being my favorite and the most versatile one.
Buy Darling Sister's new album "Rise and fall" now! Just send a pm or an email. Visit our myspace page on www.myspace.com/darlingsister for songsamples.

Hmmm, I wonder if The Rocket was inspired by the same little box?hibidy wrote:Black 76 IK singles is a fabulous comp. A term you hear with comps is "musical" and I think that maybe I understand that a bit with this one.
Oh hey, they aren't using dongles anymore. It looks like its still C/R, but still it means I can actually try them out.hibidy wrote:It's just a curiosity question, but is perhaps one of the 3,498,785 compressors in the nomad factory deal worth considering? (again, it's a question, not an endorsement)
EDIT: I can't download the demos, their site is messed up!
EDIT2: It works again!
I spend a lot of time on my laptop and traveling, I've been called a digital nomad, so dongles and that sort of thing are just a no-go. I also don't like installing device drivers and such. Nomad Factory's FAQ section lists a whole host of other reasons to avoid it as well. But, if I had a fixed setup again, I might consider something with ilok/pace/whatever.
You're right I did. I really think they should have a much smarter circuit there that doesn't obliterate the signal. If I hit "auto" on something, I except it to do something useful, you know?Kr3eM wrote:... are you sure you didn't have 'Auto - make up' activated on the output?xybre wrote: That leaves Compassion. It can be a beast, it has a cool and informative UI, and external sidechain. It doesn't Phluck like the CL Series, but my biggest complaint is its issues with gain reduction. It gets *loud* to the point that even with input and output gain all the down, it's still miles in the red zone.
... and why has nobody given any love to the Deft Compressor by Voxengo? It's not fair at all![]()
Well, I have two things that makes me shy away from Voxengo.. One I just wish their UIs weren't so.. you know. And the other is that there's so many plugins and I'm not even sure what the difference is sometimes. Neither of those things are Voxengo's fault, its more of my own personal issue. I will add that one to my list though, if it blows me away, I don't care what it looks like.

Oh don't be misled, I want several.sadkin wrote:Looks like you have at least come to terms with needing two compressors...but for many of us, even more are required - like a swiss army knife.
On the other hand, I'd like to keep things simple whereever possible, its such a pain in the ass to get my studio setup on a new computer as it is. And another thing, even if I like something, I may hardly ever use it, so I'd rather not waste $50-$500 on it, you know? I have enough software and hardware that goes unused as it is.
And speaking of $500, thats my absolute limit for a single plugin right now, I mean damn guys, I've spent thousands on my software and hardware, but I'm not made of money.

I use several instances of The Rocket in every project, use it to give some grit or punch, aggressiveness, etc.
As a clean, very versatile compressor COMPassion is definitely my favourite [Edit: you can make it sound in every way you want, though]
If I have to choose two, those are my pick.
But I also have Bombardier, Major Tom, oldTimer, Deft Compressor, Crunchessor, NY Compressor, T-racks classic and 670 and find them all pretty useful. Chech also Molot (free) and ToneBoosters' (20€ for the bundle).

I love the sound of the rough rider free compressor from audio damage. I love what it does to drums. Definitely worth checking out!!

I particularly like SIr Elliot's freeware compressors, which given that he's actually a hardware compressor designer, with 20 years + experience, experimenting with design in VST, is hardly surprising.

For the 1 stop shop of compressors I think COMPassion pretty much does this, with it's seemingly infinite number of parameters, which make it so indepth, which is why I love it.
The Glue and Midnight series compressors get use for me, as do the Antress ones.
For drums though, you might want to demo this

The FET compressor, modelled after the 1176 apparently.
And also, you definitely want to try out Nebula, plenty of libraries of good compressors there.
