Isn't the timepiece just a clocking device only?
Sorry, but this whole thing is just not my cup of tea, which is why I'm asking.
So far all is down to "you need hardware to pull that off", is there really nothing possible to port that over to pure software form with an additional DIY job for cables?

let's revive again this thread after a year!
i have a smartsync by midiman (i think this label became m-audio i think). i bought it used 2 years ago. i used it to sync my yamaha mt120 4 tracks analog recorder to machines like boss sp-303 or boss sp-505 etc;
the process to do it working correctly is:
-record an fsk signal from the midi out of a machine (drum machine, sampler etc), pass that signal in to the midi in of the smartsync wich converts that signal into audio (fsk) signal via its own tape out; this signal has to be recorded into a track wich normally is dedicated to this; in my case is track 4 in (aanyway "sync" is marked on the rear pannel near track 4 out). the tape has to be clear, new is better in order not to "disturb" this trasmission.
press just play+rec on the recorder and some seconds after make the process begin (launch the midi circuit, in other word).
now the fsk signal is recorded.
with this process the recorder became a sort of midi out potential unit because, if we connect its track 4 out to the tape in of the smartsync, this one will convert the fsk signal into midi signal, via its midi out, so we can connect that midi out into a midi in of a sampler or a drum machine or a soundcard etc...
...now that i tried to explain that, i have to say one thing: the smarsync by midiman worked well since last year, now seems to not work well no more; i will try it again but if it doesn't works, could i try to use the plugin by rv0 for the same aim or it isn't conceived for that?

I got an email saying a new post was on this thread, but its not here so I thought I would reply anyway. I looked on my hard drive and found I had a small piece of software called MIDIClock https://midiclock.com/ . I've never had the need to install and use it, as I already have hardware for this purpose, but it might be useful for someone out there?
Not sure if it supports Smart FSK, plus bear in mind there are two forms of FSK. I used to own a Philip Rees TS1 but the FSK on that did not work with my Yamaha SY55 for example, as the FSK is the older type on that. So I bought a Yamaha YMC10 MIDI FSK Sync Converter and that works fine.

the sync track is recorded by connecting the midi out of eg: drum machine to the tape sync box, which sends the fsk signal to the track. you record at the tempo you want, for as much time as you need for the song. then when you play back your tape/recording device track, with sync out connected to the tape sync box, its midi out starts the midi devices connected to it. 'smart' fsk has song position pointer, as opposed to basic fsk/tape sync, so it can locate a bar position in the midi 'song'. it needs a couple of seconds to lock up, so you need a run-in at the beginning, or when you are starting part-way through a song.
