It's been a hot seller for us. It's picked up major steam since M-Audio started getting it out there. I wouldn't worry about crossover between it an VT. But, the instruments of the 60's and 70's refill IS like a light version of VT.soulkraka wrote:thinkin bout pickin up the sonic refill. can anyone recommend this package? If you haven't done so already, check out some of the riff demos on www.esoundz.com for Sonic Refill. That should give you some idea. But, it is over 2,000 sounds and includes material for ALL of the modules inside Reason 2.5 For the price you can't miss really. 1.2 gigabyte refill packed with SR quality sounds.
Less Reason users are on K-v-R but maybe some users will reply with their opinions as obviously ours would be a little biased.

I ordered the sonic refill and expect to get it Monday. Give me a couple of days and I'll tell you what I think. I have high hopes!

Well I got it in and now I regret saying I would post my impressions. It's hard to pass judgment on a product until you've lived with it for a while. The main reason I purchased the Sonic Refill was the recommendations of several people in the keyboard forums (http://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/ultimate ... forum;f=18). They described the Sonic Refill as a sot of Rompler for reason, and after trying it out I'd agree. It may have everything a rompler would have, but that doesn't bother me. It has what I use. IMO, the NN19/NNXT programs are the best part of the package. The strings are so deep, I regret buying the Props String Refill. The subtractor patches are good, but I've found some free ones I like as good. But the samples are really nice. So I would recommend it and would definitely buy it again.

Glad you like it. Yeah, the Subtractor patches are good but this synth has it's limitations. Malström is capable of a lot more plus you have more stereo spread to play with.
Something to note here. The "Sonic Refill" is also one mega refill that is our volumes 1-5 in one. Volume 6 is a GM set called "Omni" and Volume 7-15 are totally different sounds than the Sonic Refill "box set" you got. You can think of them as "virtual expansion boards" covering very specific groups of sounds. We're also working on more synth refills too and some other fun stuff.

I was playing with the Malström patches last night, and I did like them a lot. I also like the vocal folder in the NNXT patches. There is a lot of variety there.

So is the nnxt and nn19 stuff mostly taken from your sampletank/sonic synth content or is any of it new? Thanks.

For the original "Sonic Refill" box set which is the vol 1-5 in one big refill the sample set is almost exactly Sonic Station which is also a cousin of Sonic Synth. There is some crossover material between the three. Vol. 6 is Omni GM which is the same as OmniSynth/OmniSoundz material but vol. 7-15 is based on a mix of our sessions that we did for classic SR titles for hardware samplers like the Akai as well as a lot of other material that is made specifically to take advantage of the samplers in Reason (well, the nnxt really).floyd wrote:So is the nnxt and nn19 stuff mostly taken from your sampletank/sonic synth content or is any of it new? Let me add that after I have spent some time with the Sonic Refill, I'm thinking that maybe I sould slow down on my soft synth purchases and concentrate on reason. I'm getting, essentially, all the sounds I want.
I hope other kvrers don't read this and start a flame war. I still love soft synths.

There are a lot of things you can get out of Reason especially if you have the sound content to take advantage of it.

If P'Head would just make us a small tool to make Malstrom patches... I love that synth, but it took me about 2 hours of playing with it to already want to start using my own sounds for the oscillators.Squids wrote: Malström is capable of a lot more plus you have more stereo spread to play with.

Yeah, I felt the same way about the oscillators, naturally. But, even working with the ones provided there are a lot more interesting sounds you can get with this one vs. Subtractor. Also, for stereo pads etc.Yasoo wrote:If P'Head would just make us a small tool to make Malstrom patches... Squids,
Yes I do! But like I like the old moody, crimson, and genesis type sounds... and of course the strawberry fields and stairway flutes.
I liked the tron type patches in the sonic refill. Do any of the other refills have tron sounds (i.e. the mike pinder sounds)?

Yes. The "Instruments of the 60's & 70's" is a must-have. The "Retro Keys" may sound like it but perhaps not as much because it also has an 80's flavor which you may or may not like (retro digital synths on there).DKeenum wrote:Squids,

There are also new refills coming out as well. Plus, there is a TRON CAPSULE from our Sonik Capsule line and it is nearly finished and should be released in the this Summer. But, I'd snag the 60's & 70's refill for as cheap as it is. Can't go wrong there if you like trons and vintage stuff.

Ok, well you've captured my interest with the sonic refill. If I understand correctly you get all (or most?) of the samples from sonic synth/station, minus the effects, + reason-exclusive rex, redrum etc stuff - all for less $ than synth/station. Is that correct? If so, sounds good.
However, I browsed through the site and I found a grand total of 0 mp3 demos for sonic refill... Since there is no 'demo' per se, its very important to have some audio to go on. Any chance of knocking up some mp3s?
