Would you still buy Reaper if it will cost you as much as the other DAWs ?

I tried Reaper years ago when it was still really just being developed. I couldn't make heads or tails out of it. But the development since then has been pretty impressive (I'll visit the site every now and then to check it out).
For my needs, it would probably be more valuable than FLS (which I have shelled out money for), and a price point structure similar to FLS would probably be where I would price it (i.e. more than it is currently selling for).
The reason I haven't gone over to Reaper is that I'm extremely satisfied with Cubase. I understand that Reaper has a Cubase skin, which would make it more attractive to me, but at the same time, what's the point if I've already got Cubase?
Cheers

The SWS/S&M extensions have "Trigger next (or previous) preset for FX X on selected tracks (or selected FX of selected tracks)" actions that you can MIDI learn.Bladerunner1962 wrote: And Reaper has no (known) answer for me, INDIVIDUAL learning Midi for switching through the presets (next/previous).
You can make a custom action to select track (eg) 1 and then one of those actions. If you did it this way, then you could have permanently learned controls on your controllers for whatever VSTi happens to be in track 1, 2, 3 etc.

Like Xenakios i would probably say no
Reaper has various issues, not least is the devs complete non interest in finishing any of the features they have already started, there is always something new to be added and it shows in its basic usability
Is it the best in its price range, yes by a long long way, but that is simply because it has so many features at that price range
It isn't slick, it very rarely has the latest (Shiny shiny) features like other more expensive hosts and updates (No matter how many people fall for the "lets post every line of code we change as an update in the what's new.txt" ethos) are pretty much the same as any other developer, granted they come as a steady stream which is helpful in terms of removing bugs/issues, but the overall update process is same old same old.
Why do i use Reaper as my main host now ?
It does what it says it does (Albeit can be painful sometimes)
It is cheap
It rarely if ever crashes (Very important to me)
Overall it's a good host but raise the price and it is average

Over the last year or so I must have installed and removed Reaper four or five times. It did my head in. Then I reached a point with the host I was using (no names...) where I said "I've had enough of this" and went looking for a new host.
It came down to Samplitude and Reaper and I ain't got the money for Samplitude. Right around that time, after spending some serious time trying to learn Reaper it kind of clicked and now it's my main host. If it had cost $200 or more... nope, not got even that kind of money for my music at this time. $60 just about fit with what I could get together - so thanks Cockos.

So far I'm getting the impression that is 50% is about price tag with Reaper.
That means that if we would put all the DAWs at the same price range, Reaper could seriously loose lot of users. I wonder if money was not an issue with most of us, what DAW we would end up to use, not just have, USE!

I own Cubase, Reaper and Samplitude. I was unhappy with the direction of Cubase around the switch from SX to C4. Liked a lot of the audio editing features of Samp. Regret that purchase every day. I am now on C6 and like I said I have a license for Reaper.
There is a lot to like about Reaper from a features standpoint, but every time I try to use it, it's just a completely yuk experience. Even when they implemented the new tabbing stuff in 4, it is still clunky and butt ugly.
I will continue to upgrade Cubase, I won't buy another Reaper license. Price doesn't enter in to it. If Reaper was free, I'd still buy and use Cubase. I don't know what the price pain point on Cubase would be to force me to use something else. I hope I don't have to find out.

Yes. It does things that I've wanted out of Sonar for years, and will never be implemented, ever. Do I have my gripes with Reaper? For sure. Show me a perfect DAW, though. I'd buy that in an instant.
That said, if Cockos increased the price, they would prolly lose customers.

I think the other DAWs need to start selling versions of their products for cheaper, without all the bundled garbage that no one wants. Compete with Reaper on the strength of your software. That would be an interesting market test.

What's funny about that is the number of threads that ask for just the opposite. "If you just throw in this one more tool, I'll have everything I need". Of course, everyone's "one more tool" or "if you just change xx" is completely different.Arglebargle wrote:I think the other DAWs need to start selling versions of their products for cheaper, without all the bundled garbage that no one wants. I think the quality and over-all feature set of Reaper is commendable based on the price and dev team size. I'm glad I don't have to use it. It's kind of half way between Audacity and Logic or Cubase.

All I know is (former hosts) 2001-2008 crash city failfests.
Reaper in 2008, was able to finish tracks. Fast. Been steady progress since.

That was my experience, too. Everything else crashed too frequently or didn't support multiple VST folders or didn't support some very basic audio or midi routing in between tracks. Reaper did it for me then and it's still doing it for me now. I would pay the full commercial license price if that's all that was available (I don't use it in a commercial capacity yet, so I can get by on the $60 license, as I have since version 2).AetherCoyl wrote:All I know is (former hosts) 2001-2008 crash city failfests.

As someone who actually likes to use a DAW's bundled synths/effects/content (spoiled Logic user here), I'm going to have to say no. What Reaper offers in features doesn't outweigh what others offer in content (to me, personally). To be honest, Reaper's low price is what got me on-board. I do like Reaper for general purpose audio editing, but to me it just doesn't feel "right"... I can never find the exact words to better describe that feeling, unfortunately.

If Live or Cubase or Sonar etc. would sell for $60 they would fly off the shelf but Reaper doesn't. Are we settle for a Honda just because we can't afford a Ferrari?
