I do like the interface of Sonar X1, but you're still rather locked into Sonar's way of doing things with it. And if that's not the way you want to work, oh well!
The interface in Reaper could be improved no end, it has a plenty of UI niggles that are beyond the scope of this thread.
shallow wrote:another example of clunky interface is in the use of beziers for automation - beziers are good and at least Reaper has them - but instead of using a 'handle' approach as for example Illustrator does - you have to open a little box and adjust via that. And there is no key command or macro available to do that! (or wasn't when I last looked)
Again - nice to have the functionality but the implementation of the interface is poor and only needed to copy a common convention.
It really is worth learning to use an app before making blanket statements that are very very wrong ;)

Reaper has had handle type adjustment since the very first version of its Beziers, just hold alt ;)
I have to admit I have asked for handles on occasion - I would prefer that to using alt - but then again, how many hosts even have spline based automation? - I only know of FL Studio (whose interface feels even more thrown together to me), and Podium (a nice UI but lacking lots of features I need). Plus the node reduction is very elegant.

Sorry no idea
I have never read any of the documentation for Reaper (I'm told it is very good)

thanks for the reminder - I use Reaper so seldom now I had forgotten that. However I can't find that modifier listed in my copy of the v4 manual (searching under bezier and tension) and I can't see it listed under actions in Reaper - Do you know whereabouts that modifier is documented?
I guess that this is a good sign how deep Reaper is when such details aren't documented in the 400 pages manual.

OK, it was a nice try, right? :hihi:

Seriously, sometimes I ask myself if I should be just thankful for the manual (which I basically am!) or if I should just plain don't like the fact that such a deep DAW isn't fully documented in all details? Which can be a PITA and sometimes is. But hey, it's cheap! 8)

So did you find the Alt Bezier adjustment by trial and error or did you read it in the forum or did you intuit it immediately or use another technique?
That's the problem with shortcut modifiers - they require you either read the manual in detail (something I don't like doing I must admit) or someone to tell you - and then for you to remember them all - a visual affordance on the other hand is immediately clear as to its purpose and requires no memory - I feel that a well designed piece of technology should require as little manual searching as possible and much of its core functionality should be transparent to the user. That being said all hosts suffer from this problem to an extent. The only host I know that really went to town on ergonomics was Tracktion (yes even S1 has this issue as I found recently when trying to figure out how to exit the melodyne editor and return to the normal track view - I was told to use a shortcut - which I have already forgotten )

I don't know about you but I find X1's manual to be a bit of a tough go...

And after that many pages they still missed stuff! :hihi:

All I can say is that at least Scott Garrigus still writes better manuals.. 8)

me neither - I have just bought the video though (I'm more of a visual/kineasthetic learner)

I don't know X1 and therefor didn't read it's manual. :)
Good manuals are rather rare. I seldomly read really good ones. A good one is complete and easy to understand. And if "complete" is a challenge already ...

My Reaper is customised from the ground up so i actually pretty much know how to any thing in it that it can do, Helping people in the IRC goes towards that too.

If anybody needs to know how to do something in Reaper, the easiest way is to just jump into the IRC channel at mixxnet, I'm in there most days all day and you will get an answer to any questions pretty much straight away.

I must admit i don't agree with paying for videos and such when there are people like myself you can chat to in realtime pretty much everyday and we will let you know how to do something, but i do know videos work better for some people as stated ;)

It's in
Preferences\Mouse Modifiers
context:Envelope segment\left drag
Behavior:'Edit envelope segment curvature'

^ One of my favourite Reaper features is the ability to do a text search of preferences, modifiers and actions - it needs it of course but it beats wading through long lists to find stuff.

I bought this when it first came out. It's a great book, is it free now? :?
