I was never a great guitarrist, and don't play any of my old shitty guitars for a long time (maybe 'shitty' is the clue to understand why). But today I saw this and it gave my some willing to jump into such an adventure: http://www.thomann.de/pt/harley_benton_ ... _style.htm

If you don't expect miracles and are willing to put some time in, the chances are you'll end up with something pretty decent imo, plus it'll have that *I made this* vibe about it which will count for a lot. At that price, if the basic guitar turns out well, upgrading the pups etc will be worth thinking about.

On the subject of Harley Benton guitars in general, I've had 2 and they were excellent, especially the now no longer made HBT2000 tele clone, I still curse the day I sold it.

For a quick follow-up, I do believe the SRT is a keeper. Probably the most comfortable neck I've ever played on; I think it may be a bit thicker from front to back than the typical SR neck, but slimmer width than the ATK and very "fast." Nice woods and overall construction (certainly nicer than you'll get from most other brands at that price point), and it's pretty much the kind of tight/modern sound I'd expect from a bass with EMG's. Only real complaint is the cheap plastic knobs - the dual rings on the concentric knobs stick to each other and just feel very shoddy - but those are easily replaced with metal or custom wooden ones.

Here's a shot of my actual bass (instead of a stock pic). Even the piece of rosewood for the fretboard is quite nice.

Oh my...I'm looking for something like that...

not quite the longest but surely one of the best...nix deserves a big pat on the back. One thing about this thread, I cannot recall any 'fights' or destructive posts (with the exception of a few billion les pauls getting burned, however during these long cold new england winters I sure have saved a lot on my heating bills).

Now we have to keep the amp thread going...guitarists rule

Maybe I'm naive, but for 88Eu, what's the downside? In fact, now that I know that something like that is available, it's going to haunt me as a possible future project.

How hard could it be? They give you all the parts, right? Heck, I've got blisters from assembling an entire house full of IKEA crap. And a guitar I built myself? I'm in. Maybe.

And even if I don't produce anything playable, I think it's a great learning exercise. The hardest part for me would be finishing the body. I was never particularly gifted at furniture re-finishing, etc. I'd probably have to do a lot of reading up on it. But I'm sure there's a YouTube vid or two out there to help out.

I've secretly always admired you guys (Hink, et. al.) that think nothing of Frankensteining guitars or even building them from the ground up.

A friend who owns a frat house at a local college found a beat up old acoustic shell (with a giant hole blown through the back of the body) no strings, no pegs, no bridge, etc. He brought it to me to see if it was salvageable, perhaps as a starter for his younger daughter. So I took it. Parts (peg set, bridge, strings, etc.) didn't add up to much, though still more than the damn thing was worth. But in the end, I actually had something quite playable, and perfect for a kid to toss around without worrying too much about it.

And, it still has the hole in the body, and a heck of a back story for the owner.

YMMV of course.

Bone nut
Alnico humbuckers, spec'd like Dimarzio 36th Anniversary PAF's
Wilkinson trem with steel block and saddles (final version will probably have a fixed bridge)
Glued on neck
Locking upgraded tuners (final version will probably have non-locking tuners, though still upgraded)

I'm aiming to get the price down to $199 which is why the trem and locking tuners will have to go. Here are some more pics:

A good place to have a look, once possible to find, is an old thread by Hovmod, assembling a telecaster from a similar kit
