I only have a 5400 rpm internal drive, so I fear that if I use NCW, I will have some problems as a result of the slower speed. Is this true? It's not really feasible for me to replace my macbook pro's internal drive.

Thanks.
What do you want to know? NCW files are smaller, "lossless" (no reduction in audio quality), load faster and use less RAM.

But, if I were you, my very next purchase would be a fast external drive.

How does Kontakt use the NCW files? Does it have to decompress them at all? If this is so, then naturally a slower drive will produce some detrimental effects.
If the compressed files don't undergo any processing, then they are perfectly fine for me to use.

Kontakt 5 manual - page 39 (and 80).

I was merely trying to confirm...

Yes I know:

This will not only improve access performance
when streaming the Instrument from disk, but will also reduce its memory footprint, as
KONTAKT will decompress the Samples on-the-fly from memory with very little CPU overhead.
The downside of using compressed Samples, however, is that you cannot use external
wave editors to access them directly anymore.

It's up for interpretation though-- what if a 5400 rpm drive will handle the compressed files worse than the uncompressed ones? Thanks for the manual pages but it's as if you think I'm lazy whenever I ask for a specific confirmation.

crap!

K5 crashed in the process of compressing concert brass 2 (compressing solo strings 2 went without a hitch). tried it again and left it running. came back home several hours later and it had crashed again

anyone try compressing CB2 yet? something to do with inadequate ram maybe?

i hadn't looked at the files. anyway, they load very slowly so i assumed they were not compressed. slow :?:

Right. Just Concert Brass 2 is compressed.

Has anyone compressed Diamond yet? How much space do you save?

NI specifically recommend putting Ontakt samples on an external HD.

Anything slower than 7200 rpm is a bad idea, I am told.

I spent half a day converting Diamond to Microsoft Excel but can't make heads or tails of anything at all now

Not everyone can afford a good external hard drive.

This was recommended to me, but it's somewhat expensive and I don't know if it's perfect...the really good ones cost $500 don't they? (assumption-prove me wrong please)

"Ultra portable" yeah I'd need something 100% stationary.
