How to make that sound...

Post

hi there,
i know it was asked sometime ago, maybe many times.

there were some hints about that topic but never a real solution.

yes, i know about ob-x and what is an jupiter 8. but no it didn't solve my following question. the ob-x presets are world apart from what im hearing.

has anybody nailed the axel f. lead, bass and chord part really right?

please no newbee hints, it doesnt work with only detuned saws and lowpass. detuned unisono mode is a step forward but still, it's not there, not even close.

i tried with saws, with squares and pwm, added triangles.. but i never got to the "real" thing.

so, has anyone real hints how to get closer to the original sound?

kind regards, mark

I don't have a solution but I think it comes down to how it's processed and fit into the mix. EQs/Compressors/Reverbs etc might have changed the original sound so you might just think you can't get close?

hi and thx dalor,
im aware of mastering, delays, EQs and compression.

post processing and mastering is my domain for about 20 years.

i'm asking about the basic waveforms used, if pwm is there or not, or if you have found if it is layered with something strange, like an dx7 sound or something else. has anyone really got that sound close to the original?
and if yes, what did you do?

Here's the lead. It should be close enough - I don't know where that ringing sound is from though. Maybe the resonance is too high or the triangle is too loud.

thanks taran, but this is not really close.
this is some pwm'd saws.
listen to the original and you will see how different this is.

Those sounds are in the OP-X Pro II factory lib. And they are very close.

thanks for your reply, but no, this is not even 50% right.
as said, some detuned, filtered saw waves doesn't do it.

is there anybody with more advanced insight?

please post audio examples if you think you got it right and what you did to solve it.

kind regards, ph

I've never tried to get close to the lead but I imagined detuned saw's would do the trick? The devil often is in the detail.

Shouldn't u-he's DIVA be able to come close?

rehi dalor, please try with saws but i dont think it will work. i got better results with saws + triangels. but there is something more to find out.
anyone?
please post examples if you think you got near and how you got there.

Well there's tutorials on this sound on places outside KVR if you really want to get closer...

Yes, Diva should get fairly close, apart from the FX chain and possible EQ in the original recording.
I gave it a shot:
Diva - AxelF
Also maybe not 100% there yet. Listening to this clip, I might open the filter a little more, maybe give the PW another nudge.

patch adjusted, this is a little closer:

Some infos from an interview:

Lead: Jupiter 8
Bass: Moog Modular 15 & Oberheim OB-8
Marimba = DX7
Drums = Linn Drum
Percs = TR-808

Did you tried Arturia's Jupiter 8V for the lead instead of OB-X?

hi coktor,
tnx for your efford and time putting your samples online. i like your 1. version better but still there is a lot missing - in the original there is some kind of triangle or sine wave going on and also a fm like harshness in the upper mids.

just to make sure, im talking about the original track from harold faltermayer, not some fancy ringtone remake.
to mention the remakes, none of them got the hook or bassline even near to the original.

this is my try on the bassline, it still sucks but it is better than my current state of the hookline.

hi Wildfunk, i don't think the problem lies in the synth(s), the problem is to understand what really is going on in these sounds (waveforms, pwm, no pwm. etc.)

Yes, my example is definitely not there yet. I've only found a very bad recording of the tune, in low mp3 quality, can't really evaluate the sound.
So it's difficult to hear what is synth and what post-processing. Faltermeyer could have also simply doubled the synth, it doesn't need to be just a single synth voice in the track. I don't think the Jupiter8 had the option to pan single oscillators left or right, did it?
The "FM harshness" you mentioned could easily be stacked voices interacting, you know, like a subtle "supersaw" effect. Or what other synths call unison.
