Macaw, straight. see the Downloads page. http://code.google.com/p/macaw/

yeah, was looking at portable apps yesterday. thinking it
could be an idea to have a flashdrive with all the little
side-tools on it, to avoid having to set everything up when
getting to a different machine. seems to be a lot of 'portable'
stuff out there now. i've also always liked all the no-install
freewares. it would be good to put together the ultimate
click'n'run no-install freeware toolkit. separate thread for
that, i think.. ;)

Post

Portable stuff is awesome, I only install around 5 programs, and never uninstall. On my old computer, after about 4 uninstalls the idle CPU goes from a previous 4% to now 60%.

boot time has got stupid since i installed a pen+tablet
(probably didn't need to..); it added an old MS C++, 2005.
so i now have 2xC++2008, 1x2005(removed) and the latest one,
wdf..
it now takes two tries to boot SE 1.017(but then it's ok).
CPU stated@ 100%...?
i've abused this machine quite a bit, maybe time for a serious
clean-up, which i can't face anymore. argh.
it's time they made windows-mini.

When the computer just sits there doing nothing, idle CPU should be 99+% regardless of how many programs are installed. Anyway that's how it is here with many programs installed.

wah????! when the computer *is trying very hard to do nothing*...
i'm sort of/kinda understanding that % refers to cpu usage, not
availablity... :D

mind you, you are still using ME, for unfathomable reasons...

i'm willing to be wrong about this, it's not problem.

Idle means doing noting as far as I understand so I mean that when the computer just sits there doing nothing, more than 99% of the cpu should be available. And that's case here with more than ten third party programs running as background tasks. RBR seems to have some weird issues with his cpu usage IMO.

Well, it doesn't require to be activated unlike XP and above, and unlike 2K it isn't vulnerable to hijack by being simply connected to a network and it's extremely easy to maintain. It's running on an AMD64 2.8Ghz cpu with 4GB of RAM and I've got zillions of cool programs of all sorts on it. Many people will regard you as a clueless retard if you tell em you use that but who cares about those idiots... :hihi:

That's my last Microsoft OS btw, when/if I one day upgrade my hardware to a multicore monster I'll use the Penguin and Wine as I am not inclined to ever use an OS requiring activation and even less so to give any more cent to the Microsoft thieves.

Post

yeah, i'm not dissing the OS, i loved w98, but had to spend
a fair bit of time under the bonnet, and was out of action for
days sometimes; quite a lot of that was due to usb device issues,
and ME seemed to be w98 with the usb drivers - or something like
that. i got xp with my first laptop and it turned out to be pretty
much indestructible, easy, well-featured, a real step forwards.
once i got into it, i didn't have to re-install for 7? years..
i didn't have top register/authorize it coz it came pre-installed.
and now i've got used to vista with its little quirks and slight
workflow improvements..and annoying things. i'm surprised it has
evolved so little as a package in all the time it's been around.
by now, you'd think they'd have partnerships with all kinds of
utility providers and give you a lot more without having to
install and setup masses of progs.

Post

Yeah I know what you're saying, I pull up Task Manager and idle thing is 99%.

I got System Resources Manager free from Giveaway of the day, and it says percent used, it's pretty handy. On a full project I've never gotten higher than 30% on a dual core, memory takes up 0.2MB max on a full song.

Yeah, that's right mztk, over Win98, WinMe has built-in support for USB mass storage devices, WIA runtime for scanners and cameras and it's also got System Restore and Windows File Protection, the latter two which I both removed, slightly better memory management and faster boot. I got the OS on a second hand 600Mhz Celeron machine and then regularly upgraded one or another piece of hardware up to the system I've got now and I haven't reinstalled it a single time in the last six years even though I replaced the motherboard several times during that time. I've got KernelEx installed on it though and I don't think I could still use that OS today if it wasn't for that 2K/XP emulation layer which makes it possible to run lots of recent programs such as the latest Opera and Firefox browsers which otherwise wouldn't even start.

All good then RBR! Btw, try running a few instances of Uhe DIVA in a project and you should find your dual core cpu maxing out pretty easily.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all of you guys!
