What would a MOTU MIDI Timepiece II be worth?

I was in my local pawn shop today and I saw a MOTU MIDI Timepiece II circa 1994 for $65. Obviously, it would have little use any more as a MIDI interface, but it would still be useful as a MIDI patchbay. Is $65 a good price or should I offer the guy less? Say $50? No cables. No manual.

I would be curious if anyone has an opinion.

Thanks,

JJ

Anyone have an opinion on this?

I just checked eBay. Why didn't you? Apparently they go for $50 to $150, but I've seen much lower prices (like "given") in forum posts from 2006.

$65 sounds like he'll accept a bid of $50. For him a good chance to sell it and get rid of it. I'd imagine finding a new owner for something like this might be a bit of a challenge. If $50 is turned down you can always offer $65 again. Would a Midi patchbay be worth that for you??

No manual can be a problem though, very hard to find online...

The manual is still available (IIRC, even on MOTU's page). I happen to have one Timepiece myself (thanks to a gift from a fellow musician). But so far, I didn't implement it into my equipment yet.

I wish there would still be more modules like these available for an affordable price. Then again, the future seems to be USB-this'n-that for everything.

On http://www.motu.com/techsupport/manuals I see a manual for it's successor, the MIDI Timepiece AV and something called the "Digital Timepiece". Nothing for the MIDI Timepiece II alas...

Of course I checked on eBay as soon as I got home. That told me what people were paying. It didn't tell me what it was worth.

I found bits and pieces of the manual online. Enough that I could probably figure out how to use it.

I guess my question is whether a 17-year-old MIDI patchbay is worth $65 (or $50). I guess only I can decide that.

Thanks for the input.

Of course it did - Economics 101: The worth of anything is determined by (valued at) what the general populace are willing to pay (exchange) for it.

I really don't know where I grabbed the manual for my unit. Maybe it was even on some backup remote place or something like that. Maybe I still have it on my HDD (sure hope so, haven't used that thing yet), but I can't check atm.

Hi,

I just picked this motu time piece 2 and I'm interested to buy or recycle a cheap computer to configure it entirely with the soft.

But what is the simpliest and more efficent way to use it ?

Old Mac with OS 9.0 ? Or before OS 9.0 ?
Pc with W98 and ISA port ? What kind of card should we use to connect it ?
Cables ? ?

I don't have the manuel, I will be very happy if someone can help me, send me manuals, drivers and so on..

Thanks

Best regards

Lau

This is probably one of those rare instances when I have the detailed info that you are seeking. I have a MTP II with a broken serial port. It's broken because I was plugged into my ISA card and the wiring in my apartment was bad and the MTP was not plugged into the same outlet as the computer.

Ok, like you care.

But, don't waste your time trying to find the ISA card, they are hard to find and just add complication. The best way to configure these without anything else is an old mac running OS9 because the serial port is just a straight connection to the mac serial bus.

BTW: $50, or $75 is a fine price for one if you need it. I've seen them as low as $20, but that's rare. I don't think that many sell at $100.

Hope this helps,
gs.

Make sure that it has an apple ADB port. It will be obvious if it does as it looks exactly like the port on the back of the MTP. You need a straight ADB cable to connect them together. They are fairly easy to find, although, I haven't looked for one recently (as in the last 10 years or so, heh!)
