Has ANYONE got ZYN to work in Ubuntu 11.10 Desktop?

ANY suggestions will be Greatly appreciated. (Sorry for long post)
I have ZYN (excellent, thanks Paul) working in Windoz XP.
Attempts in Ubuntu 10.10, 11.04 and 11.10 proved frustrating and unsuccessful.
The funny thing hardware wise is I use a separate Cru Tray with XP and the ZYN
install works.
The SAME box with a Cru Tray loaded with the aforementioned OSs, one at a time, the ZYN install does not work. I'm using an RME Digi96 PAD card,a joy. ALL audio functions i.e. music, video etc. play well but not ZYN.
I have scoured various Forums for weeks. I do not want to install Ubuntu Studio.
ALL I want is to be able to playback ZYN and noodle a little. One suggestion: "use Jack" left me in the woods again. Jack never did get up and running.
Admittedly, I'm a grey haired noob without lots of Linux experience but every
other attempt to deal with Linux probs has been resolved. Unfortunately,
NOT with ZYN. My ignorance is deep. If it wasn't such a really nice app I'd just say WTF and walk away but I want it to work.

Its working on mine. I do have Jack working though. I have Ubuntu and then installed UbuntuStudio or something on top to get all the extra packages.

Doesn't this require Jack to be the audio server? So you may have to get that going first.

Although I'm in a similar position to you - not really too knowledgable about Linux

All I can say is that I'm running Ubuntu and jack with my Digi96 PAD with success. In the jack settings, you have to set 256ms for latency and (mandatory) specify 8 input and 8 outputs. No other settings will work. But when it works, it's rock solid.

So : use jack.

Have you not got it installed at all? If not, can you add an extra repository for Ubuntu Studio and just install the one program, or is that part of the standard Ubuntu repositories?

Try AV Linux, it comes with Yoshimi (enhanced Zyn), Jack, etc and everything works with almost no effort.

I reinstalled jackd and qjackctl after the ZYN install in 11.10. It seems that your suggestion: "Doesn't this require Jack to be the audio server? So you may have to get that going first." will be the way to go. A screen save of the a working jack setup would be appreciated. After years of patchging wires I need to understand the Digital World of Jack.
I've looked at lots of jack suggestions in various forums resulting in a glazed look creeping over my face. The "messages" info, when attempting to start jack, is Greek to me given the "convoluted nature of 'sound' in Linux" (I've seen this quote Many times in my searchs).
Re:"the ZYN install does not work". What I should have said is: ZYN was installed by the OS, opens on desktop but does not function (i.e.No Sound is
heard.)

As I continue to deal with jack I'll certainly look at AV Linux. As you know the most simple solution is usually the best.

The screenshots are at the qjackctl wiki, and use zyn as an example. The 4th and
8th links at the wiki should get you started. usb audio interfaces use
3 for the Periods/buffer setting in qjackctl.

Install a2jmidid and run the command

a2jmidid -j default

after starting jackd. This gives you a jackd midi port,
and you can use that to connect yoshimi, the updated variant of zyn.

There may be an issue where zyn won't work with jackd2 in some setups,
because it does not display its audio port. Jackd2 is different than jackd1,
separate software, and not always an 'upgrade'. Use what works with your hardware, and don't make a habit of needless upgrading.
Zyn is worth mastering, one of the best instruments in the world
to create inspiring music with.
