What programming language/skills do i need to get started creating plug-ins?

I'd like to start creating my own plug-ins but don't even know what programming skills i would need to know?, can someone point me in the right direction?, i've been a musician, producer and web developer for years but never learned how to create software. i'd like to learn!, thanks for any help on this
