Just want to protect people from this issue I discovered.
History- I decided to jump all in and see what kind of live performance tool could be made with an iPad. So for my Christmas list for my family, I asked for all of a certain company's accessories. In the meantime, I decided to check out the free version of some apps. Then, there was a sale on some in app purchase options that I jumped on. All good until I start playing around with the included presets. Every single one of them wouldn't work as it needed other components that were not part of the FREE version. Why on earth include presets then? Figuring that I will just jump in and buy the full version, so I can get the proper experience and use the presets, I discover that I am out of luck. All the money I just spent on these packs won't be enabled in the full version. I would have to buy the full version (which I want to) , and then repurchase the same packs again (sadly at full price as promo is over).

So to everyone out there, Stay clear of FREE versions if you plan on purchasing anything. Get the full version first so you don't get your money taken away from you.

Sadly, I now have these accessories and have to decide if I want to keep them or return them out of principle.
Maybe they will fix this issue for me and I can come back and say all is good?
It just sucks that my Christmas and Birthday gifts ended up being tied to this one company and it is turning sour.

It depends on the company ... but that does sound like an unnecessary, dirty trick :(

Anyway, are you 100% sure your purchases won't carry over? It could be the results of a bug or similar ... it's happened with Alchemy Mobile, where it looks like the user needs to purchase everything again but in fact that is not required and can be sorted out by taking various steps (we'll fix this in the next update).

Perhaps try contacting the company to find our for sure, or check the FAQ section if they have one.

Peace,
Andy.

Might help to know the software that you are referring to. I'd echo what ZenPunkHippy said, too. Some apps appear to be asking you to buy the add-ins again, but when you enter your password for the iTunes store, it will recognize that you've already bought it and download again without actually charging you. Alchemy Mobile is like this. I think Sampletank might be as well.

All programs interface with the iTunes store when you buy in-app purchases. Until you enter your password, though, they have no way to recognize whether or not you've bought something. As soon as you enter your password, it checks with the store and will know what apps are tied into your account. I don't think iTunes will actually allow you to be charged twice for the same app/purchase.

Definitely worth asking the developers as well. What you are describing doesn't really make sense, and could be a bug they need to rectify.

yeah, the excuse I've been getting is that it is iTunes that is the problem, not their company.

"Unnamed company" could have approached it a different way, but why do that when you can make people pay twice for the same thing... Which I have!

If I own an iPhone and an iPad2 then surely I'm rich enough to spend frivolously. :(

Fortunately there are other companies making more ethical choices.

I wonder how long it will take for the rep to chime in here.
"All generalizations are false".
"Don't quantize me bro"!

If that's the case, it would sure be nice to know who the company is so that others can avoid it. Is there some kind of rule here to prevent them from being 'outed'?

That should be a big hint right there!

But there is no rule against saying that it is IK...

Whatever the issue, and if it is IK, I would definitely post it at their forums and/or contact them directly. Seems like it would be bad business to not address this and get you taken care of. I will say that I have Sampletank, and purchased all the add-on libraries before upgrading to the full version. I did not have this experience, but maybe it's something in their amp and vocal programs that differs?

Hope this gets taken care of and that your Christmas and Birthday gifts end up working out in the end.

My experience has been that iTunes/Apple is pretty responsive about app returns or adjustments. In the OP's situation, I would think that a couple of emails would have the whole thing sorted.

They would respond with a Youtube video of how to buy in-app add-ins for their products, twice, write some incorrect bullshit about how its Appstore's fault, and end the post with an :D

I don't want to name them out of respect but am pretty sure it is obvious. You can see other posts in this area to get clarification. I, too, thought in-app would transfer but they are saying no- yet the Sampletank info is surprising to me- so you are saying that any packs you buy inside of SampleTank Free, can be repurchased inside the full SampleTank without charge (as i would expect the scenario to work out)? I was thinking of getting the iRig Midi "accessory" as well to finish the set (oops, cat out of the bag), but will wait to see how this whole thing turns out.
Regardless, I think it is a good warning. In my case, there was functionality that was removed because of the FREE version (like 50 presets that are useless inside the free version).

If it is IKMultimedia (as is being hinted) then just contact them (via PM on KVR).

It is unlikely that it is on purpose and they have been good in the past.

It may well be that you are just notifying them of a bug.

Hmm, so I decided to check out the IK forums- I would come to the conclusion that yes, they do know about this- is it on purpose? Well, there are others who have experienced the same thing and the same response was given. I would now question then if this was just ignored as they will then get paid a second time.
I will see how this all ends but going to their site just made this worse in my mind. If SoundPrism Pro allows in-app purchases to be moved over from their standard version- it is completely doable and the bigger question- why hasn't this been addressed.

I would say that they should just get rid free and full version, and do what Camel Audio does and have their free Alchemy player be the only app- and offer all the upgrades inside.

Again, hoping someone (Apple or IKM) does the right thing here. As it stands, I am leaving all the accessories in their boxes in case i need to return them. I am not feeling any good faith right now.

They're usually much faster at spamming other people's threads.

Hi JavaJ,

I'm not familiar with how the other IK apps work. I've never gotten AmpliTube or Vocalive, because they don't yet support the IO Dock. But for Sampletank, at least, I can share my experience. I downloaded the free version, liked it enough to buy a few of the add-in sounds. Later on, I decided I wanted some of the instruments in full, and purchased that as an in-app purchase. It upgraded, and my add-ins remained.

Like you say, this is how it should be. I'm surprised to hear about troubles people are having, and am definitely going to keep checking back before buying anything more.
Best wishes.
