I demoed Geist but at the time it was ridiculously expensive. Then Groove Machine came along...

My guess is that FXpansion realised that they needed to be a lot more competitive and better at packaging the goods hence the new, much cheaper, better designed, drum sequencer.

I see they've halved the price of Geist - glad I wasn't tempted and got Groove Machine instead but will look at their new offering when it's released.

OT - BTW, does anyone use DCAM and do they rate it compared to the competition? I have a lot of synths so I wondered if it offered anything different. I'll try the demo too.
Geist is on a special holiday sale, they haven't halved the price.
You havent said what was wrong with Geist besides the price, and once they
put it on sale you criticize that too. lol
How can you say the new drum machine is better designed when it hasnt even been released?
Groove Machine doesnt have nearly the same functionality as Geist.
What are you one about? Where did I criticise the sale price or the new drum machine? You're either hallucinating or watching too much Teletubbies. Groove Machine is better than Geist and the fact that you're so defensive about it just confirms it. Put that in your pipe and smoke it!

Some of us listened to a lot of NiN and friends in the 90s. I blame my Industrial dancing boots.

As I'm sure you know, little pre-filter drive will enrich the spectrum and thus bring out the filter shape more clearly, so one could make the case that cranking the gain will actually make a filter sound more lively... depends on what you mean.

Anyway, that's what the param knobs are for - adjust to personal taste. Design away!

I made a lot of industrial drums for Tremor. It works really nicely for it - but it's also great for a lot of other drum sounds, believe me ;)

+++++1 you are absolutely right NO WAY

I own both Geist and Groove Machine and enjoy both of them though :)

But for sampled hits and loops, geist is king right now, it even blows Stylus RMX away IMHO because it is so darn fast to use.

I wonder if the new image with a big 5 in the middle on the FXpansion site as of this afternoon is a release countdown.

I hope so, I tried my best to like Punch but couldn't get on with it, so I'm hoping for Great things from Tremor.

I really need a new drum Synth as I'm out of love with uTonic, no particular reason except familiarity after years of ownership! :D

Maybe Tremor will be part of DCAM? :)

Actually I think it's more likely that DCAM is part of Tremor. Geist includes stuff from DCAM as well, and I think I read somewhere (in this thread?) that Tremor would include some DCAM tech as well, which can only be good then :D

You do realise that you harp on and on this point pretty much every time there is a thread about FXpansion, right?? It's getting tiresome.

And you'll find with Synth Squad, (and pretty much all synths out there in fact) that the factory content is often produced by 3rd parties, so the "crank the gain" mentality you're talking about... well.. it just doesn't exist.
You shouldn't talk about things you don't understand. What I'm speaking of isn't my opinion, it's a clear part of their design as demonstrated here:

(by them)

I'm not talking about the preset design, I'm talking about how their gain stages are by default. If you want a smoother non-over-driven sound you've got to back off the filter gain (see above video) Now, I love this aspect of being able to overdrive the filter, but it's not as clear as it could be. It's clear in this example he backs off the gain by 10db and later compensates for it with the level control to get a clean sound. I've noticed this in my own experience as well. Maybe a UI element that goes from green to read as you start overdriving that part of the gain stage would help give you a better idea of where the distortion is coming from.

...and you're right, I do criticize their UI design and as a UI designer by profession on a free forum I believe it is in my right to criticize it. It's not just opinion though, there are actual bugs in the UI.

Image

Look at the last C key. WTF? It's never been fixed though I've informed FXpansion directly about it.

Look at the gradient on the right side of the "chassis." Now look at the right side. What shape is that thing? Frankly I'd rather they let some elements breathe more and remove the sides all together to save screen real estate.

Look at the alignment of the FXpansion logo. Sloppy and amateurish. It should be centered in it's available space. That whole bottom panel needs some basic graphic design love as the way it is now it's cramped and poorly balanced. "Priority" and "Mode" shouldn't but up against the elements above them... which are... concave? Convex? a bit of both? Why?

Lots of wasted space on logos and duplicate cartoons of stuff that offer no real information. Distracting "reflections" on the wave display that only make things less clear.

So, those are design flaws, not really my opinion on their aesthetics. I also think the fact that the filters seem to be over driven at zero db of gain is wrong too. Notice I don't criticize the sound, because in that sense I think they do a great job. If you don't want to read my posts, mute me.

Yeah i read that but then i thought, Tremor in Fusor? Even the names are similar, there must be some kinda integration going on, there has to be! :wheee:

Nah probably not, unless they add extra engines to Fusor. Ooh there's an idea! :hyper:
