Finally. People, whats your views people on the imminent release of windows 8 touch tablets and phones. Bearing in mind they'll be able to run x86 software meaning full audio apps, plugins and programs. Also they'll have multiple usb connections and hdmi ports for straight audio interface, keyboard, mouse connection. RIP ipad?? I'll be buying one..

it wont kill the iPad as apple is too entrenched in the market and are the 'fashionable' side of computing. The only thing to kill an Apple product would be another fashion item but no one except Apple has the balls to make stylish computing products

Yeah they will run everything and they will have a lot of I/O, fat case, plastic crap with many useless connections.
It will suck. Like a netbook with touchscreen. Good luck using a vst with a fiddly touchscreen. Another dust collector. The reason why the ipad works is because it's fun to use. That comes at the cost of many limitations.

The beauty of the iPad is it's simplicity. Once you start adding sh!t is loses its appeal (ironically).

I'll be sticking with my iPad.

Just the other day I asked about something similar, I guess this answers my question then.

I think it's big news - especially if one can really run hassle-free their old software they're grown to love. Including synthesizer plugins. Would be marvelous to just plug the tablet to the computer, throw in a .dll, take the tablet and play with it on a midi keyboard, anywhere. I know its done already in a sense with Receptor and iOS -- but it's not the same thing. Consider this forums plugin archive - there are some that are considered vintage plugins already! Would mean a whole new life cycle for a whole lot of software. In fact it could offer a level of usability and possible uses unheard of before. I think it would be cool, and I'm interested in it. Could find some use for those bootsie's plugs with a real mixer..

The non-hi-fi-guy that I am, would love it though, if it was some cheap Linux tablet running ...

Personally I would take one over an iPad but the question was "iPad Killer?"

Isn't the iPad filled with sh!t already? What do you call the vast majority of the thousands of apps that have being announced since it appeared?
If you keep it simple, you'll just have a giant iPhone that has worse camera and don't even make phone calls.
But, OTOH, it's very "in", and gives you status, as all the other fashion crap does.

if a windows tablet was as easy to use as an iPad, and ran my windows apps, I would definitely use it.

I too am waiting for W8 tablets and I intend to work with it. As for being an Ipad killer it wont, as I dont have an Ipad to kill anyway. :-)

iPad has already some good and usable ( i used em live ) music apps.
win8 on tablets won't run legacy software so it will take another year to have some good stable win8 music apps so ... you figure it out :)

remember that a great hardware is nothing without good stable software.

Pretty sure you'll find the thousands of apps you mention don't come preinstalled.

Apple's formula is beautiful product (hardware) design and elegant user interfaces and great branding, I don't think Microsoft can hold a candle to Apple once Apple gets hold of a market.

I'm a tech marketer, who formerly worked in the mobile phone industry (I worked in marketing for the first iTunes phone as well as a popular Windows Mobile smartphone) and it seemed obvious to me that once Apple got into the industry -- basically evolving and cannibalizing the iPod with the iPhone -- it would revolutionize the industry -- and that is exactly what they did. Apple has an "innovator" culture. Microsoft has a stodgy, conservative and bureaucratic culture and it shows in the products they release. But the race really isn't about features alone, otherwise Apple wouldn't own the market like it does. Apple knows that winning the race is about brand image and brand management + technology + beautiful product design + beautiful software design. Microsoft can't beat Apple with software interface design/usability and they certainly won't win based on technology alone (partnering with hardware companies). Has anyone ever used or owned a Windows Mobile phone? Ugh. It failed for a reason. Or many of them, actually.

I think the wide-scale popularity of smartphones and tablets is the greatest possible signal yet that Microsoft is a company in certain decline. Microsoft should of -- and the knew it -- owned mobile, but they failed in a giant way. Now, mainstream (non-IT pro) consumers who were previously hooked to Windows are rowing comfortable with iOS and Android. I'm certain that smashes their concerns about using a non-Windows on a desktop or laptop, which creates opportunities for both Apple and Google/Motorola. Microsoft may put out something interesting, but will they overtake Apple and Android's market shares? Will they be an iPad killer? That's extremely unlikely. Apple also has a brand that excites people, while Microsoft, well, doesn't.

Apple gave us the iPod, Microsoft gave us the Zune. Apple gave us iOS, Microsoft gave us Windows Mobile. Microsoft gave us Windows ME, 98 and Vista. I rest my case.

Well, if they take off like Windows Phone 7 Apple and Google will have a laugh .... about 2% market share ... why should that change for Windows Tablets?

I remember a year ago when windows user told me how great the upcoming windows phones will be - just connect it to your windows computer and use a USB drive, have memory card slots, etc. Truth is, they are more restricted (in terms of software and hardware connection) than iPhones, not to talk of Androids ....And who wants an HDMI connection of you can connect to your TV or screen wirelessly? Hello, we are in 2012 ....

and if they limit tablet apps to .Net-framework (like Windows Phone 7 apps) - well, then it might get tough to have any audio apps at all. Good for security, but bad for responsiveness and latency.

just my opinion.

how should that be possible - as easy to use as an iPad with software that was written for mouse operation? hmmm, ok ...

IMO: Unless Microsoft (or Samsung for that matter) have some quality apps/tools/games in their store their pads will be dead soon enough. Hardware is only as good as cool Software to make use of it.
