suggestions for electro tom tone?

Just bought DrumSpillage after loving the demo. It was exactly what I was looking for.

Now a question: The models are great starting points for tones. What would you recommend using as the starting point for an analog-ish tom tone, like the Simmons V sounds of the past? The Noise Drum model? The Electro Snare?

One request for the future: A standalone mode would be excellent. I'd love to be able to play DrumSpillage with my DrumKat without having to load it within another application.

Oh, and while I'm at it, for the distant future, it would be great if we could load existing samples to play them alongside the analog sounds. I know that DrumSpillage really isn't designed to do this now, but I would love to have a few samples either mixed with analog sounds or just available for different MIDI note triggers--so I could play a snare sample and 3 analog toms, for example, as part of one kit. I currently use Native Instruments Battery for samples, and there's probably a way to use both within another application, but it would be great to have all those sounds within one interface.

Thanks for creating some great software!

Thanks! Glad you found us!

Perhaps in the future a dedicated tom model would be a good idea. The ElectroBassDrum can make some good sounding analog toms by decreasing the pitch envelope depth and mixing in a little noise. The Clave can be useful too and more flexible with the two oscillators. Also the WoodDrum model when pitched down can get quite tom-like.

From memory the Simmons sounds tended to be quite aggressive. Can you post an example of the kind of tom sounds you are after?

This is a great idea ;-)

This will happen in time. Layering the synth models with samples is a lot of fun and can really transform a sample and bring it to life. This is what we are doing with the forthcoming MiniSpillage 2 plugin. Excuse the plug..

Great, I'll check out those tom tone suggestions. Yes, a tom model would be excellent.

The toms I'm thinking of are the cheesy 80s sounds that we all cringed at back then...but now secretly miss. A few excerpts from my iTunes library, along with a picture of the Simmons V module I found on the Internet, are here:

Oh god you mean those tom sounds!

The advice I gave is more suited to 808 style tom/conga sounds. You can to try the suggestions I gave earlier and also throw in some long pitch envelope 'decay' times with a little 'bend' for good measure. Actually I might have a bash at this over the weekend - if anything good comes out of it I'll post it here.

OK, so here are two very very quick attempts at 80s tom tones. The first has some gated drum plate reverb added and the second is raw DrumSpillage.

I like it! ...Now, how did you do it?

Here's what I came up with today:

http://www.damphibians.com/toms.html

I started with the snare model and basically tried to add more sin wave. (That's really all I want: sin wave + noise.) Still not there yet, but everything I do with DrumSpillage sounds great.

It sounds like yours has the distortion filter on, yes?...I'll have to try that, but I kind of like the noise better than the distortion.

Anyway, it's a lot of fun. I'm using DrumSpillage and Battery as layers within MainStage so that I can have DrumSpillage for some MIDI notes and Battery for others....or blend DrumSpillage and Battery sounds. It sounds great.

It's just ElectroBassDrum so far. Basic tom pitch set to around 50-150Hz, PitchEG set to approx. 2.0x with a 200ms decay and a touch of bend. I'm using the white/pink noise setting, filtered around 2KHz and a 90% decay!

Nice! Really like it actually. Nice to hear someone playing it too.

You're right, the examples I posted use the 'Soft Clip' distortion, not too heavily but it adds a bit of grit to the sound for a more powerful 80s sound. I'd like to get closer to the kind of sounds you're after in DrumSpillage but a significant part of that sound is of course the 80s production - gated reverb etc. Still, it would be nice to get some patches together.

I have a couple more examples I'll post later and of course I'll put the pad/kit patches up somewhere too.
