2) Chacka - Diving with a Diva (4 pts) Sick.

3) bzur - divagation (3 pts) nice deep tight sound.

4) IIrs - Division 3.58 (2 pts) good transitions, need them with this style.

5) Edit: Flumba - Distant Galaxy Checkpoint... (1 pt), starts out slow but catchy groove.

Not easy to whittle these down at all. I made a point of listening at the studio so I could judge the technical quality, but in the end I allowed my emotional reactions to be the main factor.

Bjulin - Scottish Snowfalls Great stuff. Love the pipe and drum feel you managed to create. Nice dynamic, well balanced mix, that still sounds good cranked loud on the monitors. Above all this is the one that connected with me most on a musical level: I can forget about the technical apsects when listening to this one, and just float along on that little journey you created.
5 points.

bzur - divagation Subs are almost out of control on that bassline, but its borderline: I can't decide whether you were blissfully unaware of it, or whether you deliberately pushed it is far as you dared! Either way, it had me turning my monitors up to enjoy the full effect: love it! Nice spacious mix with no nasty surprises even at sub-wobbling levels.

mawa - dance of the goblin Not a bad mix, in an 80's synth poppy kind of way, but a bit too bright in general I thought, and the hi-hat in particular was louder than I wanted to hear it. Manages to stay interesting with a nice melodic progression however... wasn't expecting the dubstep bit! That bass part could have been mixed louder though I think.

JoeCat - Diva Rides Alone Great rhythm. Like the bass: might have mixed it a bit louder myself. Not so keen on the splashy snare sound. Like the general melody and progression. Lots of energy above 10KHz makes the mix sound a bit thin and splashy overall.

flumba-distant_galaxy_checkpoint_race Great bass! Decent mix. Arrangement could be better perhaps: more of a pause before the bassline kicks back in at about 3 mins for example, to increase the impact.

Good work everyone, judging this was quite hard! :tu:

As a pure divagation, I simply pushed it near the borderline, to see what happens :) Anyway, I am almost unaware of the effect on your monitors...!

I simply loved the way the bass gained an extra warm boost, just adding a chorus fx (by the way, there are two layered basses).

Oh, and thanks for the points :)

I have a 1000 watt sub-woofer which used to belong to Liam Howlett: the effect is bowel-wobbling :D

Only 8? Lucky you.. :hihi: Seriously, and I know I probably say this every time, but this vote is the hardest so far with a lot of top drawer tracks. Cointossing might be a real possibility to get any kind of top 5 list here..

Hi all,

I am not a new member of this list. My previous name was MAWA. Before I sent the songs to the contest I asked the administrator to change my name to Photonic so that it fits to my Soundcloud artist name. But unfortunately it did not happen before the end of December so I had to send the song with my old nikname. Today I received the confirmation that my name has been changed.

So please be aware of this!

IIRs: many thanks for the 3 points! I heard it also from other side that my mix is a bit too bright. I will keep this in mind!

cheers,

Photonic AKA mawa

Interesting; when I mix on bass light systems I usually end up with too much sub not too little.

Actually your bass parts do have a decent amount of sub bass content, though I might have mixed them a bit louder myself. Its the bass drum in the first section that is most lacking in sub: this makes the first section seem a bit thin overall.

However, the second section after the drop-down features a more analogue x0x style kick drum which has a decent low end thump, and this section has a much better balance at the bottom end... surprisingly good given what you mixed it on in fact!

In the end it was more musical reasons that you didn't make my top 5: I thought your piece was nice, but meandered a bit, and could probably have been shorter and more focussed. Like I said, tough call this time.

wow, this is excellent feedback.....really appreciate the effort

the problem with using such crap monitoring is that i have such a complete mistrust in what i'm hearing (especially in the low end) that i use eq's to perform wholesale cuts on what i think might cause problems

i can here mine is very thin now it's with all the rest on my ipod

will soon be getting a pair of shure 440's, and hopefully this will help me get a better handle on my mixes

as for the composition, you are right....in my defense, i only did it in the last week, but i have to really work on focus...i tend to get lost in either a 'song' paradigm (intro, verse, chorus, verse, chorus) or i just hold to rigid to 4 bars between each new element introduction...it's like i'm too scared to show my 'hand' too early, bu then i end up with unfocussed and boring :)

anyways, i do like a lot about it, and really glad i made the effort to do it

thanks again for the feedback
