Spent a bit of time with the demo & I gotta say I'm loving it. I know there's a lot of negativity going around about the presets but apart form the odd very extreme one I think for the most part they're pretty decent & do well to showcase what Tremor's capable of.
A couple of things I'm not quite happy about. As mentioned before the lack of drag & drop patterns is a bit disappointing. But another problem so far is that the not only do outputs revert back to master when changing kits which isn't to bad. But it also reverts back to master when changing preset sounds, this is could be a bit of a workflow killer. Geist reverts back to parent output when you change kits but not when changing samples within a pad. There's a lock pad & track funcion in Geist that's great for when you don't want to change the samples & tracks of locked pads when changing kits. Wouldn't it be possible to only lock tracks in Geist & Tremor. This would be especially great for Geist because it has so many tracks.

I quickly tried it in Cantabile and FL Studio and the cpu hit is about the same as in Maschine, is Tremor multicore? I know maschine is well optimized but it shouldn't be that close should it?
But yeah after digging a little deeper it does sound pretty damn good. There's something different about the character, guess it's the cloud synthesis but Fxpansion seem to have brought something fresh and new to the table. Time to fire up the mains methinks.

+1 about levels reverting, some kicks run a little hot and were causing clipping when switching.
Btw, there's an app called throttlestop for laptops which can unlock your cores to full speed. I've been using it for a while and it makes a big difference in cpu performance. Probably why i'm getting good cpu performance with Tremor. Use at your own risk though!

@Paterpeter the seq is a different design to Geist, not intended to be as deep or exhaustive. There is talk (nothing set in stone) that Geist will eventually get SOME (by no means all) of the Tremor synth functionality; in the mean time you can, if you wish, drive Tremor from Geist using Geist's midi out.
@Peevy2000 good catch! will discuss that with the devs tomorrow.
@Mescalito unfortunately these oscs won't do bandlimited sync, pwm or fm with sine waves. The triangle waveform is pretty dark though, by the time it's been rolled off a little it's not too far away.
Dragging patterns out is a bit of a problem because of the polyrhythmic & probabilistic nature of Tremor's sequencer - it has a MIDI output that (most?) hosts will be able to record.
There's no oversampling or multiple rendering quality modes in Tremor yet. It should be quite straightforward to add something like that, though.
Regarding the presets:-
Before you ascribe it all to the FXpansion crew's taste for various flavours of extreme noise, you may want to have a look in the manual as to who the sound designers on this one actually are - you may be surprised! And no, we didn't give them a brief of "make it as noisy as possible" either. Equally, though, they haven't had all that long with it yet; much less than the Synth Squad sound designers did when that came out (& even then, it took some time); it's a very powerful instrument & I fully expect it'll be another 2 or 3 months before people start to really get the best out of it - fully exploiting velocity, random & all the other mod sources to synthesize drums that are dynamic and expressive & still kick damn hard.
There's a whole world of musical tastes out there & it's far beyond the scope of a synth like Tremor to try & cover them all in the presets at v1.0.
While the synth architecture is in some ways fairly conventional, some of the more novel design aspects - particularly the multiple drive stages - mean it'll take some time for people to really get to grips with. The idea being that you can chain drive stages & filters/eq for a kind of brighten - darken - brighten - darken process, each time building complexity & richness in the signal, making the osc partials, the noise generator & perhaps a filter resonance peak or two intermodulate with one another & gel together, all the while under dynamic control from the various TransMod sources. Think of it a bit like forging metal.. drive stages don't have to mean that the final output is overly distorted or bright.
Another thing to take in to consideration when patching:- when dealing with live recorded or indeed most synthesized drums, very often one of the first things you'd do is chuck a compressor on the output with a slow enough attack time to emphasise the initial click. Tremor's envelopes are designed so you can build that process in on the sound design / synthesis side, rather than having to compress after the fact.
@elipsis1 eight voices should be around 35-40% of one (virtual) core of an i7. so when running it in a multicore DAW (are any DAWs not multicore yet?) it's under 10% of the overall available horsepower in a 4Core/8Thread machine (typical i5/i7 desktop cpu nowadays).

Can you please mail FXpansion support and give them the full details of this. It wasn't seen at all during beta testing. They'll need your complete system specs. Cheers!

I think this is a function of the demo version not saving/restoring - Freeze will often unload & reload the whole plugin, which in Tremor Demo's case tosses the settings in the trash.

I really love the way Tremor works. The sequencer is brilliant and all of the functions are so immediate and incredibly fun and easy to use. It would be my perfect drum machine IF it could load samples and had a decent factory library.
Now, before anyone says anything - I know that Tremor is a drum synth so it's never going to load samples. This is Geist's thing. Yep, I get it. There's just something so much more appealing about the GUI in Tremor than Geist. I know Angus has already tried to defend the factory presets and the quality of the sound designers but I just don't like what I hear. I'm a tweaker, not a sound designer - especially when it comes to drum synthesis. I like presets as a starting point but I can barely find a reference point with the factory library. Sorry.
I downloaded the demo of Rob Papen's Punch for a quick comparison and the stock presets for its synth engine are a million times better. It's night and day. This is a damed shame because I prefer the look and feel of Tremor over Punch. It suits the way I like to program my beats.
So. I don't think Tremor is for me to be honest - which is a damned shame. Maybe I'll re-purchase Geist as I've been watching the tutorials tonight and it makes a lot more sense in hindsight. Once I get my head around the way Punch works I think I'll purchase it and make it my goto drum synth/sampler hybrid. There's no denying the quality of Rob Papen's sound design. Outstanding stuff. I still love MicroTonic but the GUI makes me nauseous and takes away from the enjoyment. Argh!
I'm going to give Tremor time to flourish with some new sound packs before I give up on it. There's so much I like about the experience but at the end of the day it's all about the sound and the current library does nothing for me.

What about the preset number in the full version? More presets?

Wow, I'm impressed. This thing can pack some serious attitude. That intro/tutorial video is great, clarifies about 90% of what going on, but I have experience with other FXP stuff too so guess that helps. I'm definitely going to purchase this tomorrow (would purchase it now but then I'd feel obliged to stay up all night playing with it).
Regarding the presets I find there to be some very useful stuff in there and like every other plugin I own there's some that does nothing for me

So will there be a new or updated preset-pack free for owners once the sound designers are more familiar with the architecture? In two or three months time?Angus_FX wrote:Regarding the presets:-
