I went back and did some vs. stuff last night, and Punch in many ways comes out favorable IMO. It's very well rounded in terms of sound (not just providing "rounder" sounds as I've been saying) due in large part to having a sample lib. I passed on Punch because I already have Maschine and Battery and several other very good sounding drum synths, but when I put it up against Tremor, my knee jerk reaction was it was great sounding and easier to get good sounds quickly. One thing I do notice with it though is it does have a very... polite kind of sound. Albino's got it too. If you like it, you're set, but Tremor does provide a very different kind of sound.ttoz wrote:hmm i'll try the demo i mean the intro price for us geist and dcam users is tempting,
but i AM happy with punch.
(don't shoot me).
Anyway
i guess i need to give the presets a try myself.
But drum synthesis is one thing where i am NOT a preset whore, i mangle and edit ferociously!
Oh except for metrum where some kickdrum presets are already great, no but even then thinking, i do tweak the hell out of them.
Anyway, will report soon.

A first test yesterday gave me the "meh"-effect and I was underwhelmed - testing it today I'm really starting to like it though - the modulation matrix is very versatile and dialing in one's one sounds and grooves is fast and intuitive. Always test something at least twice...

Little bit of kick drum desiging... you can hear how I affect several parameters to get a roundish kick drum, with some bite to it.
I don't know if this is more in line for what you guys are after. Let me know, and maybe I'll do a batch of 'em.

Anyone explain how to work the graph system? So you select the G1 through G4 then move the blue outer dial on the synth function then select the graph and adjust... Is that about it? I may be missing something, although I read that section in the manual.

Looks like you've got it right. A graph allows you to control the modulation of any selected parameter(s) on a step-by-step basis for a particular pattern.
The slew dial is pretty fun too - controls the level of smoothing between the step values in the graph. The insert drop-down allows you to apply shapes to the graph, so you can use it something like an LFO, but you can also get specific and detailed in your editing if you want to.

Don't forget that analogue drum sounds are only a small subset of all percussive sounds. It's a bit unfair to judge Tremor against a sample selection and a sample playback engine. It can only really be compared to analogue drum machines, or other drum synths as it is quite a specific set of sounds. I think it compares really well against these.zerocrossing wrote:

Now if the purer analogue drum sounds aren't your bag, and you prefer the samples etc, then that is completely fair enough.
I really think a sample playback module would take this to a whole new level for many people. I do like analogue sounds, but not for everything. I could make entire tracks using Tremor I think. Add 4 channels of sample module and this would be the most amazing thing.
I have a Vermona DRM, which is an eight voice analogue drum synth. I think this compares pretty well. Different sounding. Obviously not as hands on as a dial for each parameter, but the fact that you can automate/sequence the dials is probably more powerful in many ways.
NEEDED FEATURES
FXPansion, put a bloody sample module on this thing right now. Sampling is a type of synthesis you know, and you've just ducked it. Man Up!
Is it possible to add a 'nudge' dial for each lane of the sequencer to move the start times of ever so slightly back or forth so we can line then up for extra punchiness.
Go on. You know you want to. javascript:emoticon('

Or... SHOCK.... You could listen to people and create some more presets for it. Some basic kits emulations like 606, 808, 909. Some sets with more pure drum synth sounds and less effects...Angus_FX wrote:Anyone who doesn't like the presets - instead of just talking about it, post some audio examples what, in your opinion, it ought to sound like. Preferably your own work, & preferably DRY, but doesn't have to be either.
Talk is cheap, give us some actual audio.
Though I would say that you are doing a bit better here than with Synth Squad was shockingly short of presets...
Sorry for the tough love. I actually think it will be pretty awesome when you add a module that plays back samples. It only has to be a simple module too.

Sample is not synthesis, and if you want sampling, buy Geist_leras wrote:Sampling is a type of synthesis you know, and you've just ducked it. Man Up!

I never realized that there were only two choices for drum plugins: (1) those that use samples, and (2) the same old boring analogue wannabes. Good thing nobody told FXpansion that; otherwise, they might not have given Tremor all this digital power.

Okay I tried it out. I am very impressed. Also it worked with my apc 40 step sequencer. Extra bonus even if that was not intended.
I am shocked because I did not like the three DCAM synths. This however is great, exactly what I have been looking for.

I watched the tutorial video and just went and bought the thing. $99 cross-grade from Geist is an awesome deal for this IMHO. I am a sucker for drum plugins (and hardware too).
Personally, I think the preset selection is quite generous, but then again I am used to the Elektron model where you get your Machinedrum and it has a couple of things to try playing and then you are on your own; the fun is all in doing it yourself. The stuff that came with Tremor was more than enough to give me some clues about what it can do and that is really all I want. I want to roll my own sounds.
You know what is a great feature? The "Reset Tremor" command (as illustrated in the tutorial). I love that. Resetting and starting from scratch is immediate and easy. My favorite preset that should be in every soft synth: "INIT".
One way to help curb your CPU hit is to watch the envelope tails (pretty standard fare for software synthesis - every tail eats resources until it goes away). When I first started up, I just put a kick beat in and then filled in the snare hits all across the row for whatever kit was in the starting config. I watched my CPU jump as the tails on the snares started to overlap to the point where I hit overload and crackles. I cut the envelope tail back on the snare and the CPU hit went right down to about 14% constant.
