From what i hear...the midi guitars i.e axon/Roland Gr 20 work really great with the sound modules? So why cant i just route the sound modules midi straight into the sequencer and then use the recorded midi info to play vst instruments? I'm i thinking right here? Isn't the main tracking problem to do with triggering external non roland sounds such as Vsti and other software directly with the computer.

I'm happy to just record the parts with axon/roland sounds and then just swap the midi with the vsti sounds i want to hear. I know i will never have the luxary of playing/recording the vsti in realtime but at least it will speed my workflow!!!

This would work - the main issue being any latency, or false-triggering issues with ANY MIDI output data - whether it's just being recorded in your DAW, and/or triggering internal VST's, or external hardware synths OUTSIDE the MIDI interface box.

Most/all MIDI interfaces that use INTERNAL sounds - such as the GR-33, or even early Axon's will have GREAT tracking, but like I said - my experience with the Roland units in particular is there is added sluggishness when driving anything outside the box.

As mentioned, some people have had better luck, but I've had better luck with the Axon's.

And yes, I look forward to any future developments in this arena. I'm predicting some sort of breakthrough any day now.

I believe the Sonnus's are mono-only, and in my trials at NAMM the response was very slow.

Then of course, there's also the option of adopting effects and stomp boxes to create 'synthetic' sounds - which I've also had fun with. In this case there are no issues with recording/tracking, but again - it's not MIDI.

So at least you still have options.

btw, the Electro Harmonix Micro Synth, Line 6 FM4, and Roland VG-8 *don't* have latency issues since they don't need to track. If midi is a must, the GR55 is a pretty neat solution.

It's a software Variax/VG8 at this point.

I hope they eventually add midi

It seems like a logical progression. Antares is good about adding useful features.

I'm sure I can't afford it

My guess is it'll be around $199 without the pickup.

iGuitar simply a usb connection rather then a standard audio out for guitar into computer, Not midi usb yes it comes with the standard roland GK series out so you can send it to a roland or axon guitar to midi convertors.

I had one of these back in the 80's It was heavy as heck with amazing sustain for a guitar. However my 24 pin to midi brain crapped out on me. It was slower then a casio DG series

I still have one (well it's a dg20. The neck has much to be desired It's a u shape extremely thick. The action on the strings is high and there is no way to make a neck adjustment. The strings are a pain to get tight enough to use It's extremely lax. If they break you can replace them with classical strings but they will have even more slack. It's a bitch to try and tighten them. It has no velocity sensitivity. You are not going to get a bend out of it but at least you can switch and do a single channel out.

When that thing breaks your options are replace the midi stuff with standard roland gk or toss it into the dumpster. They don't hold out too long. A buddy of mine has it and is scared to touch the thing for fear of breaking. It too has very very slow latency.

I tried one of those but I didn't bite. It's just another roland GK setup. The action was not adjustable. and not set up well from the factory.

The Brian Moore's are great. I have one of the 13-pin models (pre iGuitar)- running off piezo bridge pickups.

I'm personally not a fan of USB for MIDI, but hey it's at least set up for simple integration with your computer.

I would avoid the old 24-pins and yes, the Casio's are pretty much a toy.

I would say out of all of these, the iGuitar is the best choice. Well made guitars, good sounding on their own, and all ready to go.

i may be given a GR-09 synth for £50... is this a win-win situation for me??..well at least until something new comes out with amazing tracking?
