Hi, Has anyone ever run across the spoken samples within Thomas Dolby's She Blinded Me with Science? I've found that the samples were created by Dr. Mangus Pyke but I haven't been able to find these samples anywhere. These are the samples where he says "Science" and "Good Heavens Ms. Sakamato you're beautiful"

I would think someone, somewhere must cover this tune. What's the best way to get these for live use?

Thanks for the comment but I was hoping for something a little cleaner. There are no sections where the spoken words aren't backed by music. Even if I eq it so the background music is lower, it's still there. Sometimes there are special radio releases of these type of samples to make special mixes. Wondering what others have done to play this song live. At this point, I may just hire a voice over artist to recreate them but hoped there might be something else out there.

I meant recording them yourself ... with a microphone, etc.... rather than lifting them off the record.

I can't resist adding a plug for "Tubes & Wires" here... since it's my own personal homage to the song! If you do do your cover, perhaps you should use it?

Okay, enough shameless self-publicising for one day. As far as the song samples go, I think they were created specifically for the song, rather than lifted from elsewhere. The only one which *is* lifted is, I think, the bit where he says "as a known scientist it would be a bit funny if a girl blinded ME with science". I'm also pretty sure that the "Science!" and "Good heavens, Miss Sakamoto, you're beautiful!" lines are credited on the album sleeve -- and not, I think, to Magnus Pyke. His is the "as a known scientist..." bit; the others are, as it were, deliberately faked up for the song.

I may be getting this all wrong -- it's been an age since I've had the actual CD cover of the album in front of me. Damn these newfangled iPods. But I think you may be on a hiding to nowhere if you're after the samples you name; sorry!

I am fairly sure Magnus Pyke did all the vocal interjections.

It's fairly easy to impersonate.

You're right -- it's Magnus all the way through. Though since the vocal lines were indeed written for the song, it makes it still less likely that they'll be anywhere in the public domain -- unless Mr D himself (or some unscrupulous tape-op) has ever released them...

Imitation is the way to go, then, probably. I hear Antares are working on a plug-in that will morph any vocal line into "Good heavens, Miss Sakamoto, you're beautiful!"

I remember when the record came out...

Prof Pyke was quite a personality in the UK at the time on bonkers science programmes and he did a fair few TV and wireless interviews about his involvement with the song and how much fun it was.

The exasperation from Dolby of "She's tidied up and I can't find anything" always resonates here at HS Towers!

Bloody great tune though - but Dolby IS enormously and supremely talented ... and that always helps! You don't get many of them to the pound these days!

I figured I would have to go the recreation route but thought I would check here first. What a great forum!

I put an ad on craigslist for local voice-over talent to recreate the parts. I already got a few responses with audio clips and I think they will do quite nicely. I just don't have the right voice tone to recreate myself.

Live isolated samples from Dolby himself! Not high enough quality to use probably but a good fun clip to watch anyway.

I am way late on this thread. I am certain I can recreate the samples of Magnus Pyke. What I'd like to know, what effects are used to to get the semi-synthetic female voice singing "blinded me with science"?

Anyone know? Is it a vocoder? I'd like to see if I can recreate that as it feels like a useful technique to learn.

Never tried to reproduce this sound but it perhaps a vocoder with vibrato?
Watching the female "Science" phrase is separate sample from "blinded me with..."

I believe Thomas Dolby will be featured in the next issue of Tape Op magazine.

Worth checking out...
