akai can be kindof schizo. They make nice controllers and have introduced some great hardware. But most of the time they seem to be in soulless-corporation coasting mode (or in the case of the mpc 500, shooting themselves in the foot). I'm not gonna get my hopes up too high given how crappy their last ios app was (anyone remember that one? =P

Yeah. I think Akai just got lucky with some of their hardware in the 80's and 90's. That's all we remember the company for anyways. 
Having said that, the old MPC 60 is indeed still working brilliantly. Those pads are so far superior to their later releases that it isn't even funny. What's sad is that they keep saying ".. with authentic Akai Pads!!" which basically translates to: "Replaced with cheapo plastic crap from China since 1999!".
NI's Machine was the final nail in their coffin as far as I'm concerned.

akai MPC60 was created in collaboration with Roger Line ...
do we need more explanations ?
the other mpc released by akai were just (sometimes enhanced) clones,
and they lost sometimes what musicians want and sometimes they fail,
because like any other big company, the main goal of akai is to make profit.
You need one person to push up things, one person who is able to see the futur before everybody and even if he want to make money too this guy have a vision
akai don't have any vision at the moment,
they just release the akai version of NI maschine, nothing trully new or innovative (that not mean this mpc is not a good product)

I was thinking the same thing when they first announced this, but have since learned that Akai has done the smart thing and hired an established IOS firm to develop the software, Retronyms.
Akai's forte is hardware, not software.Despite the pad problems of the early MPC 1000 models, they have nicely designed pad and keyboard controllers.The new Ipad specific controller being core midi compliant will work with other programs such as the Beatmaker 2 from Intua and Nanostudio!
We will finally have a portable MPC that has everything the full size units have (16 pads,note repeat,loads of samples,etc.) with built-in connectivity to the web,email,Dropbox,etc. and it will fit in a small backpack or briefcase!

It would be really handy for me too, I use my iPhone for lots of things that would be so much better with an iPad, but I have to wait on that one.
