Hey hey.

I'm looking for loops or samples that harken to the early 90's new jack swing sound.

Anyone got suggestions? Is there anything free & legal that's geared toward this?

Post

post some video examples, that might help people come up with suggestions.

Oookaaaaayy, you asked for it!

NEW JACK CANNON: FIRE!

I know there's a lot of 808 happening in there. But even then, I don't trust my mixing skill to emulate that 1985-1995 kind of sound.
I can also see that there's some old break sampling in there, but I don't know which breaks.

I think the crown jewel, though, would be that orchestra hit that seems to occur in like 1/3 of the songs in that style. Because lord knows it hasn't be used enough.....

Or, if anyone knows a good history lesson on the era and style, I'm all ears.

you need to find samples from:

korg m1
ensoniq mirage
proteus
eIII
early roland s series

for the breakbeats damn near everything(if not sampled by the producer) came from the sample cd series from Zero G called ' datafile '

love some new jack you should post some when you make it

oh yah the poison hit is from one of the M1 cards. its included in the legacy plugin.

They had sample CD's back then?! Wow.

Thanks, this is a good foothold on researching this topic.

As for uploading material, man I'll certainly try... But I'm not having much lucky adapting my style to make it fit yet. Gonna keep trying.

It's a New Jack Swing in a box drum machine.

So I have the zero-g datafile series. Before you tell people to use that you should know that it came out at a time when things weren't as cut and dry legally as they are today, and moreover, even to the extent that they were, some things just flew under the radar.

I'm pretty sure that those CDs are full of uncleared samples and many of them are clearly recognizable as coming from hits of the day and old movies. Many CDs of the era came with a clear warning on them that they were for personal use only, i.e. clearing was the responsibility of the compilation customer, not the producer, however, the Zero-G stuff came with no such warning.

On their website today they say that they came with no commercial license.

Which is true, they came with no license, or discussion of license at all.

Of course, that didn't stop Zero-G/Time and Space from cheekily informing their customers that the copyright of the compilation was theirs and that you weren't allowed to rent or share the compilation.

get your hands on some alesis HR16 and HR16B samples as well.

Man, I always hated the New Jack Snare sound and this tune has it in excess.

The SR-16 as well which is ubiquitous, as opposed to getting harder to find, has a quite a few more sounds, and no rubber button problem. I'm pretty sure that there are a bunch of new jack swing patterns in there as well.

Oh hell yes, listen to the demo

To each his own I guess, I think it sounds light, tight, and fun. Much better than the Phil Collins snare of the eighties. BsssshhhhPaaaahhhh.

oh, I hated the phil collins snare even more!

I like really tight, 808 and break beats snares ran through samplers that had to carefully save their memory :)

I almost suggested the SR16, but I figured it may have been a bit later on. Man, those beats are New Jack if I've ever heard it.

I had every one of those drum machines at some point :)

The SR-16 has had a REALLY long shelf life. I don't think that they used the same patterns in the SR-18, I'm not sure. You can find them all day and all night for cheap. At any rate the SR has been around since 90 or 91, it was initially $399. It came out about the same time as the S3. Ensoniq was also at the top of their game at that point.

zSounds still lists them for $149, but I don't know if you get the same patterns, I can't believe that they wouldn't have updated them in all these years.

I used to have one and what I remember was that the rock patterns were pretty cheesy as were the "techno" patterns, but the RnB stuff was pretty usable. Sounds are totally early 90s.

I've done quite a few new jack tracks. Check my soundcloud and grooveshark profile

The history lesson
www.njs4ever.com - I've been a member and forum moderator since 2004 and there really isn't any place on the net bettering this one! End of story :D

More new jack track - the more obscure kind though. Still every bit as good as the hits.

That's it (for now)

Solid goooooooold..... Thank you guys, I can use all this info.

Ok I know I'm late and all but from what I seen in House Party (1990) most of the breaks are either Hot Pants Bonus Beats or Think (About It) breaks or anything thats funky and makes you want to dance. Dont know much about the drum machine/drum sequencing parts.
This is Samuel S. I make music for fun even if it isn't music.
