Can anybody devise what two chords these are?
It would be greatly appreciated.

Bm7(9) to E/B ?

Post

Only 2 chords really.

First chord low to high
F# A B C# F2
The C# does go up to D slightly in.

The next chord is
E A B E G

There is a little of leveling. Between the first and the second chord a D is added below the F# and E

Least that is what band in a box is telling me

Bm7 9, E major.

Band in the Box has no ear.

food for thought: the first chord can be thought of as [similar to] a double suspension of the second (the latter in third position). (A and C# moves down to G# and B)

Exactly. I'm sure the 9 that you hear just a little in the beginning is played more or less by accident as it doesn't exist anymore when the entire thing repeats.
Fwiw, it sounds as if it really was just a D/B (which of course is a Bmin7) and E/B. A very typical progression to, say, "describe" a dorian mode.

And fwiw #2: tapper mike, I'm almost sure it's been a typo, but there certainly isn't any G in this progression (but a G#).

Mmm, yes. I think that's the essence of this little progression.

if the Bm is i [E = IV], this is the perfect 2-chord Dorian vamp.

In the voicing in the recording, it feels like E could be I so it's a Mixolydian two-chord vamp.
The Frank Zappa Shut Up 'n Play Yer Guitar, titular tracks are two-chord Mixolydian, eg., D-C vamp.

the thing about modes and a two chord vamp is that the mode can take the bass note/root of the chord as tonic and now it's the other mode. There, over the C you play with that F# vs the E third like it's that feel from lydian. but ultimately the D is the center of gravity, Home. I think rhythm would define which is stronger there. This seems ambiguous without that defining 'One' in time as well.

Don't forget to learn to guess chords on your own, it can seem hard at the beginning but it's priceless.

I don't think I hear E in the bass though. (I do internet where I don't have a sound card, display speakers.) the bass player sticking to B, that's an E '6/4' position, gets rid of some ambiguity so it's i-IV6/4, the perfect vamp for dorian.

Post

I thought that had been cleared up already.

Also AnalogModelled's advice is very good.

Post

you thought? You can look at it both ways. If the bass player emphasizes an E on that E chord, it could be E = I.

Post

I meant that it's pretty clear from the recording (and has already been discussed) that bass stays on B for both chords. Why should we talk about E, or any other note for that matter?
